Restaurant: GB Pizza Co
Where is it: Exmouth Market, London.
Opened: May 2014.
What kind of food: Wood-fired pizza packed with hand-picked, home grown ingredients.
Who goes: Due to its location, an eclectic mix of visitors from Islington and the City, as well as fans of ‘village-feel’ London.
The concept: An all-out celebration of one of the nation’s favourite dishes, GB Pizza Co started life serving pizza from the back of a vintage 1974 VW campervan, cut its cloth with a restaurant in the seaside town of Margate (which received critical acclaim) and has now opened its first London offering.
The interiors: A slick and paired down look means the food takes centre stage. Think grey walls, neon pink strip lighting, upcycled furniture and Teddy Baden art-work.
Hero Dishes: Pizza, of course! We recommend the Air-Dried Ham & Rocket.
We tried: An enormous platter of local cheeses, chilli jam, pickles and bread to start. Then on to the main event - a classic Chilli & Chorizo Pizza with tomato and mozzarella and the special of the day – Lamb Salami with mint raita, pine nuts and rocket (delicious and reminiscent of the flavours of Greece). We were also very tempted by the Pear & English Blue Cheese topping. Those with a sweet tooth will not be able to leave without sampling the Gelupo Gelato (the salted caramel and pistachio got the SL seal of approval).
Anything unusual: The pizzas are made with British 00 flour to ensure a light, crispy base that doesn’t leave you feeling bloated.
And the drinks: Organic house wine, British craft ales, and our personal favourite - Prosecco on tap.
What to wear: Something casual and fun - jeans and a printed cami top would be ideal.
Best for: A late-night date night or lunch with friends.
Our favourite thing about it was: Aside from mouth-watering pizza and plenty of fizz, it was the passion of the staff about the product and the quirky touches (suggestions on how to eat your Pizza) that made GB Pizza Co unique.
