Restaurant: Matthew Williamson Afternoon Tea.

Where is it: Balthazar, the upmarket French brasserie in the heart of Covent Garden.

Opened: February 2015.

What kind of food: A feast of perennial cream tea favourites with a fashion twist and designed to coincide with London Fashion Week.

Who goes: London’s fashion fraternity and tastemakers.

The concept: Balthazar has teamed up with renowned British fashion designer Matthew Williamson to combine two of our favourite things - food and fashion – to create an afternoon tea with serious glamour.

The interiors: Are the perfect backdrop for a chic afternoon chow down, with mirrored walls, dark wood furnishings and an on-site boulangerie.

We tried: A curated collection of sandwiches like Cucumber, Mint and Cream Cheese Smoked Salmon, Butter and Black Pepper Crab, and Tarragon Mayonnaise and Lemon Juice Smoked Chicken. Freshly baked raisin and plain scones with Devonshire Clotted Cream and Strawberry Jam and an assortment of luxe patisseries, from Strawberry Trifle Pistachio and Kirsch Macaroon Pecan Praline to Millefeuille Black Forest Gâteau Vanilla Cheesecake, washed down with traditional teas and herbal infusions.

Star cocktail: Is the Chasing Rainbows - a refreshing mixture of Pinky vodka, Lillet Blanc, yellow Chartreuse, crystallised rose petals and brut Champagne which was created by Matthew and Brian Silva, Balthazar’s head barman, and is inspired by the floral elements and soft coral and pink colours seen in the designers’ collection.

What to wear: This is a Matthew Williamson collaboration after all, so ensure your outfit is floaty and feminine, with as much pink as you dare.

Best for: A seriously impressive Mother’s Day indulgence.

Our favourite thing about it was: There’s a fully gluten-free version of the tea for those who are intolerant to wheat or don’t wish to eat it.

What made it unique to them:  Its fun and convivial atmosphere, plus proximity to theatre land makes it ideal for a weekend treat.

The Matthew Williamson Tea is available from 3pm to 5pm every day (including weekends) until 1st May 2015. Pricing: Traditional Afternoon Tea - £25, Chasing Rainbows Afternoon Tea - £35.
