Restaurant: M Raw
Where is it: Threadneedle Walk, in the heart of the City.
Opened: December 2014.
What kind of food: Billed as a Tartare and Tiradito bar, M Raw serves up ‘small, fast, fresh plates’with a Japanese bent (think ramen, sashimi and various smoked meats). A selection of light, healthy options make this a great place to dine out when you’re trying to watch your waistline without putting your social life on hold.
Who goes: M Raw is in a prime location to attract smart finance types looking for an atmospheric post-work destination. Visit on a Thursday or Friday evening when cocktails come thick and fast and the ambiance peaks.
The concept: M is a gigantic 15,000 square foot space from Martin Williams (former MD of Gaucho) who poached Jared McCarroll fromceleb hangout Chiltern Firehouse to head up the kitchen. It’s slick, sophisticated and thoroughly stylish.
The interiors: Award-winning interiors company RenéDekker Design Team designed the M venue top-to-bottom. As the more casual dining space, Raw is modern-urban but with plenty of polish, incorporating elements of metal, concrete and supple leather into the decor scheme.
Hero Dishes: The black sugar cured salmon or the juicy onglet steak.
We tried: Tunasashimi, bacon & scallops, black cod ramen, smoked baby beets, tuna yakitori (cooked on a hot stone at our table and was so fresh it could have been eaten as tartare). For pudding we opting for the lavender and white chocolate soup which is fast becoming a favourite plus the sorbet because you can’t go wrong.
Anything unusual: After you’ve had your fill of food head upstairs to check out M Bar. As well as a grand fireplace, private chill out room where you can keep your own bottle and decks there are also high-tech wine dispensers that put a cool spin on wine tasting.
Star cocktail: Quirky Que Che was our favorite – a genius blend of Tanqueray gin, Amaretto, Salvatore Liquore di Limone and watermelon mousse.
What made it unique to them: M Raw has the feel of a members-only club but without the hefty fees.
