Forget Berocca or a hair of the dog Bloody Mary, there’s a new, all-natural way to beat that hangover: the humble pear.
Australian researchers have discovered that consuming a whole Asian pear – or just 220ml of its juice – helps keep hangovers at bay.
Monitoring 14 different symptoms usually associated with having one too many cocktails, the scientists noticed that participants having Asian pear juice before alcoholic drinks suffered less the next day. Notably, their concentration levels post-vino were much higher, while they experienced less memory loss and a reduced sensitivity to light and sound.
It seems the pears may affect the way our bodies process alcohol by speeding up the enzymes involved in metabolising booze. The research team now plans to investigate whether Western pear types have a similar effect, although you should be able to pick up the Asian variety in most supermarkets, including Sainsbury's and Waitrose.
We may just add pear juice to our pre-drinks routine from now on...
