Style Crush: Giovanna Engelbert

Falling in love doesn’t always make sense. It’s not logical, organised or disciplined – sometimes people who are the furthest from what we consider our type are those for whom we fall hardest. Case in point, Giovanna Engelbert (nee Battaglia), whose eclectic, colourful and maximalist style couldn’t be further from our usual go-to aesthetic – but regardless, we’re obsessed.

The Vogue Japan senior fashion editor’s wedding dress choices earlier this year certainly helped along our bourgeoning style crush – with her array of custom Alaia, Valentino and McQueen couture gowns proving fashion and tradition can certainly mix – but we’ve long been taking cues from her street-style looks too. From clashing prints to repurposing classic fabrics (she even makes tweed look cool), her attention to detail and ability to pull off the most outlandish accessories are what keep us clicking that ‘like’ button. Here are our takeaways from following the ultimate fashionista…

1. Add a belt

2. All white is always chic

3. Dress down a skirt with a casual tee

4. Statement skirts make your outfit pop

5. Stripes add immediate interest

6. Tweed can still be modern

7. Embrace florals

8. Metallics work whatever the occasion

9. Never shy away from statement accessories

10. Pussybow blouses can be cool

11. Stand out in hot pink
