After months of hibernating under thick layers, it’s finally time to get your pins out. So to ensure you’re looking and feeling your best in your favourite warm-weather dress, consider this your cheat sheet for summer-ready legs...
Add Some Colour
A decent fake tan is a sure-fire way to feel confident about baring legs that haven’t seen the sun for a while. Mix Clarins’ innovative bronzing drops with your regular moisturiser for a subtle glow or go full-on with James Read’s offering for a just-back-from-holiday radiance. Just remember the golden rule and apply an oil- and fragrance-free lotion to the backs of your heels and knees to avoid streaky patches.
Fake An Instant Glow
If you can’t wait for a fake tan to develop and need a summer glow asap, an instant body bronzer is the best way to go. Buff gently onto your legs, paying particular attention to areas where the sun would naturally hit. We give our full marks to Vita Liberata’s Body Blur, £19.66, one of the best instant tanners we’ve tried in a while – covering imperfections, minimising blemishes and reflecting light for a photo-ready finish; plus it’s DHA-free, meaning there’s no give-away fake-tan smell.
The first step to summer body prep should be a good exfoliation. To wake up weary legs, boost circulation and slough off dead skin cells, apply a grainy scrub to wet skin (ideally in the bath or shower) and scrub in circular motions. We love Ole Henriksen’s Salt Body Scrub, £28, which is packed with botanical extracts and natural sea salt exfoliants to restore legs to their former glory. For an added boost, keep an eye out for coffee-based scrubs, which work hard to remove the skin’s dull outer layer and will leave your pins refreshed, moisturised and ready to show off. Exfoliation will also help to eliminate ingrown hairs and even-out skin tone.
After months of being hidden away, it’s likely your legs will be feeling below par on the moisture front. Inject some hydration with Kiehl’s legendary Crème de Corps, from £18, which is fragrance-free and enriched with beta-carotene for skin that needs extra care and nourishment; incorporate this cult formula into your routine now and reap the benefits throughout summer. If you’re after a lighter formula, which also works well on warmer days, make a bee-line for Nuxe’s heavenly-scented Body Cream with Honey, £19.
Around 90% of British women have cellulite, so it’s clear we’re not alone when it comes to this body woe. Whilst there is no miracle cure, there are myriad formulations prime to improve the appearance of cellulite – keep an eye out for ingredients such as grapefruit, which breaks down, burns and prevents fat build up. Shiseido’s Advanced Body Creator, £56, is worth the splurge – its high-tech formula tackles problematic areas and significantly diminishes orange peel to leave legs smoother and more contoured.
No beauty buff would be without the right set of tools to preen herself to perfection. From Philips’ Wet and Dry Epilator (it comes with eight different heads, covering everything from body exfoliation to a trimmer and even a body massager) to Vita Liberata’s tanning mitt, stock up on these grooming must-haves.
