There’s no denying the transformative effect lighting can have in the home, and whether you’re looking to make a few sophisticated updates or in the midst of a full-on renovation, Pooky is the destination for decorative lighting for every budget. Rated by interior designers and founded by Rohan Blacker, the brains behind sofa.com, whilst the products might not cost a fortune, just like sofa.com’s sofas, they will look as though they do. We spoke to the experts at Pooky for their top tips when it comes to lighting our homes…

Tell us a bit about the brand…

Founded in 2014, the goal was to create a range of beautiful, decorative lights, which would enhance any home but wouldn’t cost the earth. Buying directly from manufacturers and selling through our website allows us to keep prices low and service quick and friendly.

What can we expect from Pooky?

Everything from table lamps and bedside lights to pendants, wall lights and lampshades. Plus, this summer we’ll be adding mirrors and chandeliers to the range.

What’s the Pooky vibe?

In a nutshell? Well-designed, well-priced, colourful and ever so slightly quirky.

Top three lighting tips?

Firstly, lampshades are ideal if you’re looking to inject colour into a room without overwhelming your scheme. Change your lampshades once a year to refresh your home. And non-diffusing (ceramic, metallic or wooden) pendants create warm pools of light for an intimate atmosphere.

Any colour or print recommendations for shades?

Warm reds and oranges are always popular, as are simple, unfussy prints with colour. If you want to mix and match prints, for example, an ikat print with a traditional Indian block print, then either use transition devices, such as a sofa, to break up the room or make sure the colours work together.

What works when mixing lamp bases with shades?

Stick to one patterned and one plain, but otherwise, the rules are the same as for fabrics generally. Find tones that work together and make sure lamps aren’t overwhelmed by a shade that’s too large, or paired with a shade that’s too small – but if in doubt, go larger.

Do you have any tips for creating flattering lighting in the home?

Use warm bulbs wherever possible – LEDs come in a range of colour temperatures so there’s no need to have blinding white. Also, dimmers give the flexibility to move from practical lighting to more gentle, softer tones. And favour lamps over installed recessed lights; they’re far more intimate and throw the most beautiful diffused light.

What’s least likely to date?

Very modern lighting will date more quickly than mid-century inspired lighting. Quality finishes will always last well, and for your lampshades, don’t worry – just get what you want and recycle them when you’re ready.

You offer wall lights, too. How do you make them look modern?

For a contemporary feel, we recommend you use clear glass paired with an LED filament bulb.

And where’s best to position floor lamps?

Lamps are useful for providing transition points from one side of a room to another and help bring more light into an area to allow for easy reading when the daylight goes. For a really standout look, find a little space behind indoor plants and use a floor lamp to highlight them.

Finally, what should you consider when installing and choosing pendant lights?

Remember that pendants work best in clusters. Try to choose metallic finishes that match your look – whether that’s brass, silver, chrome or bronze – and decide whether you want the light diffusing, to give less focused lights, or strong to create focus points in the room.
