We all know the real secret to success is hard work – and lots of it. But it’s also a well-known fact that life’s serious achievers go that extra mile to reach their full potential, letting go of certain ingrained negative behaviours in order to make it to the top.
From being too much of a follower to never asking your manager for feedback, here are the six unhelpful habits you need to give up in order to achieve the career trajectory of your dreams, courtesy of Career Girl Daily.
1. Working in your comfort zone
In order to know what you are capable off, to expand your horizons and fully go for it, you must let go of your comfort zone. Take risks, try new things and have faith in yourself, because in the end everything will work out fine. It is always better to know that something did not work out because you actually tried it, then to forever wonder what would have happened because you did not try it.
2. Being around negative people
Just like negative thoughts, negative people will influence you, will hold you back and will make you lose focus. It’s hard to admit, but they are a waste of time and you really do not need negativity in your already busy life.
3. Letting the past influence your future
Let the past be the past. It happened, you cannot change it, and it’s good that you can’t, because without it, you wouldn’t have learned all the lessons or had all the experiences that you have right now. Never let the past influence your future: you are not your mistakes and it is never too late to learn something new. It doesn’t matter where you are right now, what you have been through, what mistakes you made or what your background is: keep dreaming big. Success is for all of us, but we are the ones who need to decide whether to go for it or not.
4. Being a follower instead of a leader
There are two types of people in the world: leaders and followers. There is nothing wrong with being a follower if you are willing to accept that someone else decides what you are doing and how you do it. But in order to be truly successful, you need to be the one that’s leading. This obviously does not happen overnight and is often a journey, but that leadership mentality needs to be in you. You need to be willing to pave your own way to success without following someone else to the finish line.
5. Lying to yourself
Lying to yourself is often worse than lying to others. It is really easy to do, but we all know full well that deep down in our hearts we usually always know the truth (although we try to deny and ignore it). Accept if you have some problems, keep your head cool and deal with them. Stop making excuses and always be honest with yourself because only then you will be able to take full control of a situation and deal with it.
6. Not asking for feedback and advice
We all have our pride and often resist asking for advice or feedback. Let it go. Feedback and advice are really important and can save you a lot of time, energy and money. Not asking is often limiting and sometimes means we have to learn things the hard way when someone who faced a similar problem before could have saved us a lot of trouble.
