8 Ways to Make your Shelves Chic

Favourites 62

One glance at the shelves pictured below and you’d be forgiven for thinking their stylish aesthetics are high-maintenance to achieve. Not the case you simply need to know how to showcase them to their best advantage. Here SL has hunted down eight key ways to make your shelving as chic as the rest of your home.

CURATE IT

Assemble your favourite art, books, travel finds and other eye-catching goodies together in one place. Be sure to pick and choose the most striking pieces you own, and as a general rule, stick to a monochrome palette or complimentary colour scheme – metallic accents with soft hues work particularly well.

FILL A WHOLE WALL

For instant impact, supersize your shelves. A full wall of stacking objects, either over a wide section of a room or (if you have high ceilings) right to the top of a room, does most of the hard work for you. Simply add some extra points of interest in the form of earthenware jugs, framed artwork and large glass decanters to complete the look.

EMBRACE THE SYMMETRICAL

Whether it's neatly arranged photo frames, stacks of books or decorative vases, symmetrically placed items are a shortcut to style.

KEEP IT LOW

If you’re strapped for space or prefer a Scandi-look home, try low-hanging shelves – they’re easy to install and leave room for larger paintings above.

PAINT THE BACK

Who knew something as simple as painting behind a shelf could make such a difference? We love this look in an on-trend charcoal grey, but for really modern interiors try a few sections slicked in pale pink or an eye-catching printed wallpaper.

POP SOME COLOUR

Girly, maybe, but a pop of hot pink or coral on otherwise all-white shelves is very pleasing on the eye…

SHOWCASE YOUR PRINTS AND ARTS

Bypass all that DIY and prop your art and favourite prints up on shelves, instead of hanging them as normal. Not only is it that much easier, it looks pretty cool too.

HOUSE YOUR WARDROBE
From Gianvito Rossi heels to Chanel bags, we’d like to wager there’s a wardrobe piece or two in your home that’s well worth displaying. A modern alternative to the usual books, we’ve fallen hard for this shopping-meets-design look.
