If you want to learn something new, why not learn it from the master? Whether cooking (with Gordon Ramsay), fashion (with Diane Von Furstenberg) or tennis (with Serena Williams), imagine having the best of the best as a personal tutor. Well, that’s exactly what MasterClass does. The site is redefining online courses, giving exclusive access to industry leaders for less than £100 for hours of tutorials. With an expert to match every passion, it’s not hard to see why it’s making waves…
What’s the concept?
MasterClass was created to give everyone access to the knowledge and skills of the world’s best creators through informative, instructive and engaging classes. ‘Instructors’ – that’s Kevin Spacey, Usher, Shonda Rhimes, Hans Zimmer and more – create online tutorials, assignments, course materials and Q&As related to their specific expertise. ‘Students’ then work through these and have the chance to upload and critique each other’s work, building on feedback from each other and from leaders in the field. The aim is to create a library of knowledge and expertise that everyone can tap into.
So, what tutorials are available?
You can learn comedy with Steve Martin, singing with Christina Aguilera, writing with James Patterson and much, much more. Currently, there are tutorials spanning everything from sport to acting, score writing to filmmaking, with courses on chess, jazz, conservation and architecture coming soon. The videos are exclusive and MasterClass are constantly producing more, so if your passion isn’t already represented, it soon will be. We’re particularly excited for Diane Von Furstenberg’s classes on building a fashion brand.
How long do the courses take?
However long you need, each course is around two to five hours of video content (some are longer) but once you’ve selected and paid for a class, you’ll have lifetime access to the content, so can go at your own pace.
And how much does it cost?
It’s £95 per class, but you’ll have the videos in your account ready for re-watching anytime.
What does it include?
Unlimited access to your classes; a workbook with chapter recaps, important notes and exercises; membership to an active community of students where you can upload your own work or provide feedback on a peer’s; and feedback from experts and instructors.
Who’s it for?
Anyone looking to further a passion, hone a skill, switch careers or try something new. After all, how often do you get the chance to cook up a storm with Gordon Ramsay?
You can also give the classes as a gift, and there are special opportunities for student participation – author James Patterson ran a competition and the winning student is now co-authoring a book with him, so you never know what'll happen...
