Is This The Secret To Amazing Hair?

Favourites 38

To tackle product build-up and promote healthier, longer locks, give your head of hair the treatment it deserves beyond a shampoo and conditioner with a scalp scrub. Here’s why you need one…

Why do you need a scalp scrub?

It’s not glamorous, but the scalp has more follicles and sebaceous (oil) glands than other parts of the skin, so dead cells and sebum can build up more quickly, causing grease, flakiness and itching. Plus, all the hair products we use can cause build-up. That’s where a scalp scrub comes in – just like exfoliating the skin on your face, it will remove dead skin and dandruff, meaning your hair can grow stronger and healthier.

So it’s different to a shampoo?

Yes – where a shampoo merely cleanses strands, a scrub stimulates circulation and eliminates product build-up. Most scrubs are used as a separate treatment from shampoo.

Should everyone be using one?

Hair experts say healthy locks starts with a healthy scalp, so we should be incorporating a scrub into our routine on a weekly basis. Plus, the latest drop of scalp scrubs means there’s something for everyone, whether you’ve got oily hair or thinning hair that never seems to grow.

How do you use it?

Simply apply a golf-ball sized amount of scrub into wet hair before shampooing, taking the time to work your entire scalp. Be sure to rinse thoroughly (this can take a couple of minutes, especially with grittier formulas) before using your normal shampoo and conditioner.

Are there any ingredients we should be looking out for?

Keep an eye out for formulas that contain alpha hydroxyl acids (AHAs) such as fruit acids, or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) such as salicylic acid, for gentler exfoliation compared to using products that contain coarser, more abrasive particles.
