The New East End Restaurant To Book

Favourites 18

It’s official: Broadway Market has added another cool bistro to its already impressive list, and this one comes with Ricardo Pimentel, ex-Salt Yard chef, at the helm. Serving up a tasty selection of pimped up small plates, Tuyo, our new favourite canalside hangout, is set to be one of Hackney’s brightest gems. We paid a visit…

The concept… Mediterranean and Levantine-inspired dishes, served up 'pinchos' style, on small plates and designed to share. The result? A tasty mismatch of European and Middle Eastern flavours.

The setting… The restaurant is set at the end of Broadway Market overlooking the canal, so food comes with a fantastic view. The open-plan kitchen adds to the ambience, and the whitewashed walls scattered with neon fittings make this all the more hipster and very east London. But it’s the food that makes Tuyo really stand out from the crowd. Each dish is bursting with flavour, and we challenge you to fault the presentation.

What to eat… Choose from prawn and Padron peppers served on skewers with Sicilian cherry tomato and lilliput capers salad; ox tail croquetas with mushroom alioli and pickled cucumber; and spiced lamb tagine served atop roasted sweet potatoes, Greek yoghurt, marsala apricots and prunes. Be sure to try the char-grilled artichokes, which come served with soya beans, black quinoa and a scattering of feta cheese and parmesan.

What to drink… There’s a great selection of wines from around the world – we tucked into a delicious Italian Gavi di Gavi – but it’s the cocktail list that will really make your eyes light up. Choose from Saffron Aphrodisiac infused with tequila, agave, lime juice, saffron and chilli peppers; Moana, with vanilla ice cream Puerta de India Strawberry, Maraschino liquor, Grand Marnier and Cava; and Beso de Lavanda – Hendricks served with lavender and lime syrup. The cocktail specials are well worth a look, too – we tucked into an Amaretto colada, followed by an espresso Martini.

Who goes… Hackney-dwelling foodies. The intimate setting makes this a great spot for date night, or for a light lunch before taking a stroll around London Fields.

We’ll go back for...  The ricotta dumplings stuffed with lime and ginger curd. We couldn’t fit another morsel after our sumptuous spread, so next time we’ll know to order less to make sure we can fit in a dessert!
