The Fashion Rules Short Girls Should Know

Favourites 37

Those of us not blessed with Gisele-like pins have to pick our outfits more carefully than our long-legged friends, as selecting the wrong clothes and accessories can make us seem even smaller. Here are nine pieces short girls may want to avoid, and the easy alternatives to create the illusion of extra inches…

AVOID: Ankle Strap Heels

A pair of pumps with a strap across the heel is going to cut your legs off prematurely, making them seem shorter than they really are.

ALTERNATIVE: Pointed Pumps

Elongate the leg by avoiding any interruptions between your calf and your foot, adding a pointy toe finish for added illusion.

AVOID: Boxy Dresses

Oversized kaftans, uncinched waists and long hemlines can make you seem dominated by your clothes.

ALTERNATIVE: Wrap Dresses

Wrap dresses hug in just the right places – adding a definitive waist and an elongating side split creates more proportionality.

AVOID: Flat Boots

A simple hack to appear taller? Ditch the flat ankle boots, as they cut your legs short.

ALTERNATIVE: Heeled Boots

Invest in a block heel pair instead for day-to-night style. A sock boot is ideal – the leg-hugging design makes your ankles appear longer and thinner.

AVOID: Head-To-Toe Oversized

As comfortable as all-oversized-everything may appear, teaming baggy knits with loose fitting skirts also creates a drowned effect.

ALTERNATIVE: Different Proportions

This doesn’t mean ditching oversized clothing altogether, instead just be sure to balance pieces out with more form fitting styles. Try boyfriend shirts with pencil skirts and skinny jeans, for example.

AVOID: Heavy Layering

Forget shirts teamed with knits teamed with coats teamed with scarves. An overly layered look will create a boxy effect, making you look wider as opposed to longer.

ALTERNATIVE: Keep It Simple

You can still rock the layered look, but instead opt for knits and blazers, or shirts and jumpers for a more streamlined, elongated finish.

AVOID: Low-Rise Jeans

Low-slung denim (aka jeans that sit on your hips) are essentially the exact length of your legs, which won’t do you any leg-lengthening favours.

ALTERNATIVE: High-Waisted Skinnies

Instead opt for waist-hugging styles to make your legs look impossibly long – skinnies are preferable for an unfussy, slim finish.

AVOID: OTT Sleeves

The trumpet sleeve trend may be cool, but adding too much extra volume around your arms will make them appear shorter.

ALTERNATIVE: Boyfriend Shirts

The beauty of the boyfriend shirt is its longline fit, which makes your torso look longer. Plus, you can roll up the sleeves – giving a flash of wrist that elongates your arms. Pop the collar too, for a lengthened neck.

AVOID: Oversized Bags

They may make you look slimmer, but oversized bags create a Polly Pocket effect – you’ll look disproportionately small next to your accessories.

ALTERNATIVE: Mini Minaudières

Instead opt for mini options for the inverse effect – small bags will make you look taller, as well as more sophisticated.

AVOID: Voluminous Skirts

Oversized, full bodied skirts make your legs look shorter, your hips look fuller and your bum look wider. Aka, they’re best avoided if you’re not tall and willowy.

ALTERNATIVE: Pencil Skirts

A hip-hugging design (high waisted, of course) will make your legs look extra-long – team with long sleeved pieces for lengthened limbs all round.
