10 Ways To Switch Up Your Beauty Routine For Autumn

Favourites 30

What works best for summer skin won’t necessarily cut it now the weather’s getting colder. We went straight to the beauty experts to discover the new season switch-ups to make now...

Protect Your Pout

“Don’t forget to protect your lips in lashings of lip balms – autumn weather is breezy and cold and can dry out delicate lips super quickly. I love By Terry's Baume de Rose, £39, and Fresh's Sugar Lip Caramel, £15.” – Fleur de Force, beauty blogger and YouTuber.

Use Nurturing Oils

“For a hydration boost in the colder months, I’ll switch up my micellar cleanser for a more nurturing balm cleanser and facial oil. I particularly love Willowberry Nutrient Boost Treatment Oil, £22.50, and Erborian Dongbaek Camellia Essence, £54, but I rotate about five that I'm particularly fond of to make sure my skin doesn’t get used to them.” – Jane Cunningham, British Beauty Blogger

Change Shades

“Where summer is all about the fresh glow, the winter months are all about going a little heavier. You can’t go wrong with the classic smoky eye – NARS do great palettes if you’re looking to invest.” – Lillie Russo, make-up artist.

Layer Serums

“I use significantly more serum in the winter months – they’re packed with myriad skin benefits, whether you’re looking to hydrate or fight blemishes, and they can be used on their own or layered under moisturiser. Darphin’s Stimulskin Plus Divine Serum, £180, is one of my favourites, as is Dr Sebagh’s Serum Jeunesse, £215.” – Millie Kendall, Co-Founder of BeautyMART

Have A Three-Step Routine

“The winter months can leave the skin more vulnerable to damage so take a three-pronged attack to keep it under control and radiant. Make sure you exfoliate at least every other day, add in a good-quality serum as well as a cream and layer together to boost skin turnover.” – Dr Nigma Talib, naturopathic doctor.

Go Heavy On The Base

“The number-one make-up swap to make for winter involves your base – make sure you start using a slightly richer face cream, such as Chanel Hydra Beauty Crème, £51. You should also try a slightly creamier foundation, such as Hourglass’ Stick Foundation, £42, rather than the sheer formulas most of us prefer in summer. Just make sure you buff it in with a round brush to avoid hard edges.” – Jade Bird, make-up artist.

Mix It Up

“Your skin will become drier as humidity levels drop, while the switch from indoor heating to outdoor cold can wreak havoc on the complexion, making it more red and sensitive. If your skin is very dry, try mixing an oil in with your moisturiser, taking the time to massage it in. My current favourite is MV Organic’s Rose Plus Booster, £77.” – Dr Rabia Malik, cosmetic doctor.

Transition Your Tan

“Keep your summer glow going for as long as you can before returning to your palest winter foundation by transitioning your summer product of choice with a few drops of bronzing gel, such as Clinique’s Face Bronzing Gel Tint, £18.50” – Jessica Kell, make-up artist.

Take a Supplement

“I swear by Dr Perricone’s Omega-3 Supplements, £75, as the weather gets colder – they really do work to hydrate the skin from the inside out.” – Alexia Inge, co-founder of Cult Beauty

Put A Mask On

“I don’t need any excuse to layer on a moisturising mask and will preach their benefits to anyone who’ll listen. Bamford’s Nourishing Mask, £70, is a personal favourite, as is Neal’s Yard’s Wild Rose Beauty Balm, £40, which can be used as an overnight mask.” – Justine Jenkins, make-up artist.
