Set in the sprawling countryside of Oldstead, on the edge of the North York Moors National Park, the family-run pub is the first British restaurant to win TripAdvisor’s international ‘best restaurant in the world’ poll – a success story even more impressive when you consider the eatery is less than ten years old.

Brothers Tommy and James Banks took over the village pub from their parents as teenagers back in 2006, and have since seen it go from strength to strength. Four years ago it won a coveted Michelin star – Tommy became the youngest British head chef to ever win a star at the age of 24 – along with four AA rosettes.

The pub prides itself on home-grown ingredients – it’s set on two-and-a-half acres of land and most of the fruit and veg is grown in the garden or at their parents’ farm down the road. Food is fresh and seasonal with masterpieces on the menu including squid dressed in horseradish juice; crapaudine beetroot cooked slowly in beef fat; and Texel lamb with turnip and mint and cake made from chicory root and blackcurrant.

A tranquil retreat – there are gorgeous rooms you can stay in too, so you can really make a weekend of it – promising Michelin-worthy fare in beautiful, bucolic surroundings. This has gastronomic getaway written all over it.
