When it comes to knowing what’s hot, no one has their finger on the pulse quite like Natalie Kingham, Buying Director at MATCHESFASHION.com. She calls the shots on exactly what the high fashion retailer offers each season, and with over 20 years of experience, she’s one of the industry’s most knowledgeable insiders. We sat down with Natalie to find out what she’s adding to her wardrobe this Autumn/Winter…
My everyday style is quite eclectic… I’m very happy in suits and trousers but equally as happy in long, loose dresses. I like surprising accessories to keep things fresh and relevant, for instance a Vetements string bag, Prada platform shoes or a Mickey Mouse brooch.
My one stand-out trend for autumn is… Tailoring.
But the AW17 trend I won’t be wearing is… Belts. I always need to be comfortable and I just can’t get into wearing belts at all.
Every capsule wardrobe needs good layering items… That includes the best polo necks you can afford. Bodies are really useful too, and I also always stock up on silk socks from Raey – small details like these go a long way in how you feel in the colder months.
My latest investment piece is a rubber leopard coat… It’s from Christopher Kane. There are also good ones from Burberry and Wanda Nylon.
If I could only buy one pair of boots for AW17… I would go for an army trek sole boot from Prada or Valentino. Although I would also do a sock thigh high from Vetements or Balenciaga – both of those styles are perfect to balance out pretty dresses.
The number one item on my wish list is… A shearling coat from Marques'Almeida.
My most-worn item this season is… A Balenciaga tweed hourglass blazer. It pulls together a lot of looks and the shape is incredible – I’ll definitely be archiving it.
I save on off-duty, relaxed clothes, but splurge on… Great knitwear and sweaters. I find better quality knitwear lasts me many winters.
When I’m on a night out, my go-to look is… Tuxedos. They’re a fail-safe, easy way for feeling chic and they work for almost all evening occasions.
But when I’m headed to an important meeting… Smart trousers and silk blouses always look polished… but I still enjoy adding a quirky badge!
Being a Buying Director means I strategise for the upcoming season… I look at the trends and sales, and work with the buying team to execute the budgets. I also direct the tone of the buys to ensure the best product is being bought across the whole business; from jewellery and swimwear to RTW bags and shoes. What we buy needs to speak to the right customers and tell a compelling story, as well as ensuring integrity of design, brands, prices and relationships.
The best thing about my job is… Being passionate about clothes for a living.
One thing I’ve learned working in the fashion industry… Is that you can’t pack light for Fashion Weeks. Everything is essential!
When it comes to SS17 trends, I’m excited for… Sports couture from Jil Sander and subcultures from Prada.
