The Best Christmas Sandwiches 2017 |
Favourites 5

When it comes to Christmas sandwiches, everyone’s at it – and with endless options, come lunchtime it can be hard to choose. Step in, the SL taste test. From classic turkey baguettes to not-so-festive sounding steak and stilton, we tried them all and ranked them in order of deliciousness…

1.  Benugo: British Turkey, Bacon & Cranberry Bloomer With Pork & Sage Stuffing & Horseradish Mayo, £3.95

A clear winner in the SL office. Succulent slices of turkey slathered in between two thick pieces of seeded bloomer bread. The sage and onion stuffing was a particular highlight and the subtle hint of horseradish gave an added tangy hit – the perfect accompaniment to salted, crispy bacon rashers and sweet cranberry sauce. Benugo will also donate 50p from every Christmas sandwich sold to The House of St Barnabas – a charity-run member’s club who help homeless people find work in London.

2. Benugo: Brie, Roast Beetroot & Spiced Pear & Date Chutney Bloomer With Wholegrain Mustard Mayo, £3.95

Flying the flag for the veggies, Benugo’s creamy brie bloomer was a surprise hit. Perhaps not as festive as turkey and stuffing, but everyone loves a bit of brie at Christmas, right? The pear and date chutney was absolutely divine and tasted even better with a spicy hit of wholegrain mustard.

3. Waitrose: Christmas Steak And Stilton Sandwich With Crispy Onions, £4.25

A solid sandwich bursting with bold flavours, succulent slices of roast beef are paired with a strong hit of crumbled stilton cheese. Quince adds a slight sweetness whilst the crispy onions – that come in a bag for you to sprinkle yourself – add a lovely crunchy texture.

4. Sainsbury’s: Snow Globe, £3.50

This sparkly little number comes in its very own snow globe and a golden brioche scattered with edible gold stars – the most festive looking of the bunch. Inside you’ll find thick chunks of butter-basted roast turkey breast, beechwood smoked streaky bacon, pork stuffing, Brussels sprouts, ‘slaw, mayo and a sweet cranberry and port sauce. Not for the fainthearted, this is essentially an entire Christmas dinner in a bap. Nap-inducing festive grub at its finest.

Paul: The Merry Veggie Sandwich, £4.25

Whilst the words ‘meat and dairy-free’ might not soar to the top of the list when picking a Christmas sandwich, Paul’s vegan offering scores top points as a festive veggie alternative. Look forward to roasted spiced pumpkin and rosemary-infused bread filled with radicchio, grilled courgette and carrot, fresh spinach and crispy onion with a warming beetroot and horseradish compote.

Eat: Festive Full Works Bloomer, £3.95

Ham, turkey, stuffing and cranberry? No wonder EAT’s festive bloomer is called ‘The Full Works’. Boasting all the trimmings, this is the equivalent of devouring a whole Christmas dinner in packet form. Be warned, you’ll be gagging for a snooze as soon as you finish the first slice.

Paul: Dinde de Noël, £4.65
