Favourites 5

When it comes to Christmas sandwiches, everyone’s at it – and with endless options, come lunchtime it can be hard to choose. Step in, the SL taste test. From classic turkey baguettes to not-so-festive sounding steak and stilton, we tried them all and ranked them in order of deliciousness…

THE BEST:

1.  Benugo: British Turkey, Bacon & Cranberry Bloomer With Pork & Sage Stuffing & Horseradish Mayo, £3.95

A clear winner in the SL office. Succulent slices of turkey slathered in between two thick pieces of seeded bloomer bread. The sage and onion stuffing was a particular highlight and the subtle hint of horseradish gave an added tangy hit – the perfect accompaniment to salted, crispy bacon rashers and sweet cranberry sauce. Benugo will also donate 50p from every Christmas sandwich sold to The House of St Barnabas – a charity-run member’s club who help homeless people find work in London.

2. Benugo: Brie, Roast Beetroot & Spiced Pear & Date Chutney Bloomer With Wholegrain Mustard Mayo, £3.95

Flying the flag for the veggies, Benugo’s creamy brie bloomer was a surprise hit. Perhaps not as festive as turkey and stuffing, but everyone loves a bit of brie at Christmas, right? The pear and date chutney was absolutely divine and tasted even better with a spicy hit of wholegrain mustard.

3. Waitrose: Christmas Steak And Stilton Sandwich With Crispy Onions, £4.25

A solid sandwich bursting with bold flavours, succulent slices of roast beef are paired with a strong hit of crumbled stilton cheese. Quince adds a slight sweetness whilst the crispy onions – that come in a bag for you to sprinkle yourself – add a lovely crunchy texture.

4. Sainsbury’s: Snow Globe, £3.50

This sparkly little number comes in its very own snow globe and a golden brioche scattered with edible gold stars – the most festive looking of the bunch. Inside you’ll find thick chunks of butter-basted roast turkey breast, beechwood smoked streaky bacon, pork stuffing, Brussels sprouts, ‘slaw, mayo and a sweet cranberry and port sauce. Not for the fainthearted, this is essentially an entire Christmas dinner in a bap. Nap-inducing festive grub at its finest.

5. Benugo: Honey Roast Pulled Ham & Smoked Cheddar Bloomer With Spiced Apple Chutney & Wholegrain Mustard Mayo, £3.95

Everything you could ever want in a ham sandwich. Sweet honey roast ham, smoked cheddar and a fabulous spiced apple chutney to add a tasty festive twist. Delish.

6. Paul: The Cosy Christmas Pig Baguette, £4.50

A cunning take on traditional ‘pigs in blankets’, this artisan apricot and sage baguette comes with chunky Lincolnshire pork sausages, smoked bacon slices, spinach leaves, sweet apple chutney and slices of crunchy apple, to add a welcome hit of freshness.

THE REST:

Pret: Christmas Lunch, £3.75

Pret’s Christmas sandwich selection is something to look forward to as soon as the festive season hits. Sticking to its roots, this sandwich is a stalwart on the sarnie scene. Expect generous layers of turkey, far too much stuffing and a sweet cranberry and port sauce. And 50p from each sandwich sale goes to charity.

Paul: The Merry Veggie Sandwich, £4.25

Whilst the words ‘meat and dairy-free’ might not soar to the top of the list when picking a Christmas sandwich, Paul’s vegan offering scores top points as a festive veggie alternative. Look forward to roasted spiced pumpkin and rosemary-infused bread filled with radicchio, grilled courgette and carrot, fresh spinach and crispy onion with a warming beetroot and horseradish compote.

Eat: Festive Full Works Bloomer, £3.95

Ham, turkey, stuffing and cranberry? No wonder EAT’s festive bloomer is called ‘The Full Works’. Boasting all the trimmings, this is the equivalent of devouring a whole Christmas dinner in packet form. Be warned, you’ll be gagging for a snooze as soon as you finish the first slice.

Paul: Dinde de Noël, £4.65

A posh twist on a classic turkey fest. Stone-baked, cranberry-infused baguette with succulent slices of turkey, crispy smoked bacon, spinach leaves and a delightfully creamy horseradish sauce to give an extra kick to your sandwich spread.

Eat: Goat's Cheese, Pear And Date Bloomer, £3.95

Packed with rich, creamy goat’s cheese and red wine mulled pears – this is a veggie Christmas sarnie with a side of decadence.

Pret: Smoked Salmon Baguette, £4.25

Simple but oh-so-tasty. Smoked salmon, cream cheese and fresh dill nestled in a Pret signature artisan baguette.

Tesco Finest: Beef & Aged Red Leicester Sandwich, £3.00

A smoky, meaty infusion of succulent British smoked Applewood pulled beef, slabs of aged red Leicester cheese and a welcome hit of tangy red onion marmalade.

Pret: Very Merry Christmas Lunch Sandwich, £3.50

The vegan Christmas lunch was a surprising hit in the SL office, thanks to the generous dollop of spiced chutney. Healthy and packs a flavoursome punch – this is a serious contender on festive sandwich shelves.

Starbucks: Turkey Club Thin Flatbread, £3.59

Melted cheese, crunchy fresh ‘slaw, and subtle Christmas spices – this festive flatbread offers a cunning twist on the more traditional of sandwich offerings.

Crussh: Festive Turkey Feast, £3.95

Meat lovers will love this festive sandwich slider. Generous slabs of turkey, bacon, and sage and onion stuffing sit inside slices of malted bread with spinach, mayo and cranberry sauce. A little salty but incredibly Christmassy.

There’s nothing fancy about this simple Christmas sarnie, but it’s got everything  you need to see you through a hangover-induced festive season: turkey, sausage, bacon, stuffing and cranberry sauce.

Marks & Spencer: Turkey Feast Sandwich, £3.20

This meaty marvel ticks every box on the Christmas sarnie wish list. Thick slices of the highest quality turkey, a generous serving of stuffing with bacon, mayo and cranberry chutney.

Morrisons: ‘The Best’ British Butter Basted Turkey Lunch, £2.70
Moist stuffing and cranberry sauce provides the perfect mix of sweet and salty, offset against crispy bacon and chunks of roast turkey breast, all served up in between two soft slices of onion-infused bread.

M&S: Turkey Wrap Sandwich, £3

A lighter alternative to M&S’s classic sandwich offering, this festive spread comes wrapped up and ready to go in a soft flour tortilla.

Co-op: Irresistible Pigs Under Blankets, £3.35

A smoky infusion of butter-basted turkey, cloves, sage and onion, bacon and sausage finished with an indulgent spice, creamy mayonnaise.
