We spend a fortune on new party wear each season, while rarely touching our hair routine. But surely a carefully planned festive outfit deserves special occasion hair to match? From adding an accessory to updating a classic style, we caught up with Imran Chowdhary, session stylist for Instyler, for his top tips...
Whether you choose to upgrade your bun with a few sparkly bobby pins or keep hair tied back with a bejewelled band, there’s never been a better time to forego the basic blow-dry and opt for a festive statement hair accessory. Bonus points for tying your hair with an on-trend ribbon, but just remember Imran’s golden rule: “To keep ribbons looking cool, don’t match yours to your outfit and keep it clashing for style points. The only exception? If you’re wearing black.”
Perfect for the dancefloor and those who don’t like their hair to look too groomed, a stunning halo plait actually looks better a little messy. Start by prepping the hair with a texturising spray for volume and hold before plaiting along the hairline from your parting; repeat on the other side and pin together for the full halo effect. “For an undone, cool-girl look, pull on small sections of your plait once done to loosen it up,” Imran advises.
“You can’t go wrong with a party ponytail,” says Imran, “just style it to your outfit for the best effect. Wearing something fun? A half-pony with a loose wave is the way to go, but if you have a high neckline, keep your pony high to show off your cheekbones. Going for a low-back dress? Either do a sleek side part or centre part and comb into a chic low pony.” Our top tip? Complete with plenty of shine spray for a glossy, party-ready finish.
“Topknots are everything appropriate – they work for day and evening events alike,” says Imran. “To keep it on the right side of cool, leave it messy. Flip your head upside down, tie your band high and twist in your topknot. Just remember to seal your look with a misting of hairspray.”
If you’re looking to up the ante on day-old hair, a tousled bun has you covered. “Start by spraying hair with a dry shampoo before twisting into a loose bun without brushing through and fix with grips. The secret to keeping it looking undone? It’s just that – don’t work the hair too much and don’t try too hard, keep everything to a minimum, including product and pins.”
Effortless glamour at its best, a loose wave will have you party-ready in no time. Our top tip? Pair with glowing skin and a bold lip for a striking look. We love Duck & Dry’s Blow Dry In A Bottle – start by misting this through 80% dry hair before working a medium-barrelled tong through small sections to add movement. Remember to keep the ends straight for a modern look.
