Why The Ponytail Is Making A Comeback | sheerluxe.com
Spotted on catwalks everywhere from Burberry to Erdem this season, ponytails are having a renaissance. Worn at the nape of the neck in a sleek style or tied-back with a bow for a more nonchalant vibe, it’s the low-maintenance look to embrace now. We caught up with the experts to find out their golden rules for the perfect ponytail.

Curly Ponytail

“A loose ponytail with a casual, texturised finish works well for both day and night,” explains Sam Burnett, Owner & Creative Director of Hare & Bone. “Remember the golden rule and keep your natural texture – either enhance using a smoothing cream to control flyaways or if you have straight hair, create movement by lightly tonging the hair. For wavy or curly hair types, incorporate rope braids during the day and undo come evening for instant volume.”

We love KMS Makeover Spray, £16.50, which is perfect for creating soft, natural texture whilst keeping movement and volume through the mid-lengths and ends.

Romantic Ponytail

No longer restricted to girly-girls, the ribbon tie has recently undergone a style remodel, neatly dressing up the strands of models and A-listers alike. Ensure the look is more cool-girl than school-girl by gathering hair at the nape of your neck and loosely tying with an oversized bow of your choice. Make like the pros and work with a minimum of day-old hair to give your style some staying power – remember to use a serum to tame flyaways; we love Lore Originals’ Prepare + Protect, £21.50.
Want to take the look from desk to dancefloor? “ Mist Sam McKnight’s Modern Hairspray through small sections of the hair to create texture and swap your ribbon for a more evening-appropriate colour such as black velvet,” says Jonathon Eagland, stylist at Nicola Clarke by John Frieda.

Side Ponytail

A low side pony is perennially chic – sweep your locks to the side and secure them low for a cool-girl take on the look. “Either keep the ponytail loose with natural movement for a casual look or incorporate a fishtail braid for extra detail and texture,” advises Sam Burnett.

His top tip? “Apply hair spray around the nape of the neck to control the hair, ensuring it sits in the right direction for a professional finish.”

Sleek Ponytail

Sleek and groomed, the slick ponytail is the perfect balance of glamour and practicality. As Sam Burnett advises, “Try blow-drying roots in the direction of the ponytail to create a smooth, sleek finish and reduce frizz. Either keep styling to a minimum with a dry, matte finish or smooth a gel wax such as Oribe Gel Serum, £58, through the hair before fastening into a simple ponytail for a more dramatic look.”

Just make sure your final style isn’t too rigid – even the smallest amount of movement keeps the look modern and youthful; if your hair is on the thinner side, try misting Redken’s cult Quick Tease, £13.50, through the ends. Mitchell Ladbroke, stylist at Nicola Clarke at John Frieda swears by the power of a shine spray for this look – try GHD Final Shine Spray, £9.95.
