What started as an update on the classic rain coat (at Burberry, naturally) evolved into a fully-fledged plastic proliferation – on this season’s runways everything from towering ankle boots to handbags have been given a transparent update.

See-through bucket hats and over-the-knee boots may be on the extreme end, but there’s possibly something refreshing about such a useful trend. Look to the street style stars for inspiration – those in the know are layering up classic trenches with voluminous perspex versions or slipping clutches into oversized clear bags for a fashion-forward update. The high street has already interpreted the look for less, bringing Gianvito-inspired heels and vinyl shoppers to fashion fans at a more affordable price point.

The look hasn’t been without controversy – in an age in which global brands and independent names alike are stripping back plastic consumption, the fashion industry seems at odds with the zeitgeist. So if you’re going to invest in the trend, the responsible move would at least be to recycle your purchase later. Or, instead of the total look raincoat, invest in something small – those perspex inlay pumps have our name all over them…
