Met Gala 2018 – SL’s Favourite Looks

In the fashion world, not even the Oscars come close to the Met Gala, the sartorial show drawing in the biggest and industry names each year. A celebration of New York’s iconic Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute, this year the Vogue-sponsored event was themed ‘Heavenly Bodies’, inciting supermodels, actresses and singers alike to channel a hybrid of Catholicism and fashion. Here are our favourite looks…

Who: Kate Bosworth

Wearing: Oscar de la Renta

Why we love it: This embellished tulle gown is perfectly offset with a pearl-encrusted train, giving it a romantic, heady mix of old-world glam and bridal-like drama.

Who: Winnie Harlow

Wearing: Tommy Hilfiger

Why we love it: Another wedding-inspired look, this drop waist corset and full-bodied skirt strikes a traditional note, whilst the dramatic headdress adds a surprisingly modern finishing touch.

Who: Alexa Chung

Wearing: Alexachung

Why we love it: Alexa always manages to pull off events dressing whilst not losing her own unique fashion identity. Pearls, tulle and bows put a girly spin on her classic style.

Who: Rihanna

Wearing: Maison Margiela

Why we love it: Never one to let a dress up opportunity pass her by, co-host Rihanna went all out in the Catholic-inspired, pearl and jewel encrusted creation.

Who: Emily Ratajkowski

Wearing: Marc Jacobs

Why we love it: Not many people can pull off head-to-toe gold lamé, but Emily Ratajkoswski does it with aplomb, paring a tousled up-do and minimal accessories with the look for polish.

Who: Bee Shaffer

Wearing: Valentino

Why we love it: You can’t go wrong in a statement red dress, and Bee Shaffer’s off-the-shoulder, ruffled design with bow detail proves there’s a feminine way to rock the trend.

Who: Anja Rubik

Wearing: Saint Laurent

Why we love it: She may be defying all the hemline rules, but we can’t help but be seduced by top model Anja Rubik’s killer statement black dress. Feather-lined heels add an extra dose of drama.

Who: Sienna Miller

Wearing: Louis Vuitton

Why we love it: Even for big events, high-low dressing can be a real winner, and Sienna Miller confirms that with this statement skirt and simple white top. A showstopping headdress nods to the theme.

Who: Naomi Watts

Wearing: Michael Kors

Why we love it: Proving that sticking to the theme doesn’t have to mean going all-out, Naomi Watt’s gold and white jacquard print dress is flattering, grown-up and wearable.

Who: Alicia Vikander

Wearing: Louis Vuitton

Why we love it: Alicia Vikander rarely wavers from her dedication to Louis Vuitton, and this showstopping combination shows why. Lace, leather and tiered cape details come together in a surprisingly vintage-inspired look.

Who: Cindy Crawford

Wearing: Versace

Why we love it: Curve-hugging shape? Tick. Flattering red shade? Tick. Cindy Crawford can do no wrong, and this statement red Versace gown confirms she’ll always be a style icon.

Who: Rosie Huntington-Whiteley

Wearing: Ralph Lauren

Why we love it: Few people can go all-out and embrace the Met Gala theme whilst still looking stunning, but RHW pulls it off. This dramatic, caped, embellished Ralph Lauren dress complete with halo headdress is an ethereal showstopper.

Who: Kate Moss

Wearing: Saint Laurent

Why we love it: Another Brit figure who never compromises on personal style, Kate Moss’s short, feather-adorned LBD is a wearable hero, glammed up with statement jewels and strappy sandals.

Who: Letitia Wright

Wearing: Coach

Why we love it: The Black Panther star’s Met Gala debut proved she’s a style force to be reckoned with, wearing a gold pleated tunic with black lace top for a fashion-forward take on the theme.

Who: Anna Wintour

Wearing: Custom Chanel

Why we love it: White may be a departure for Vogue Editor Anna Wintour, but her signature style tropes are all still there, from heavy beading to cap sleeve details. A cut out décolletage design puts a modern spin on the look.
