11 Of The Best Bakeries In London

Great British Bake Off is well and truly back, and with it our appetites for cakes, biscuits and bread. Need a little inspiration of your own (or just a snack while you watch the show)? Head to one of these top bakeries for some of the best sweet treats in town…

Anges de Sucre

French for ‘sugar angels,’ Anges de Sucre is an award-winning sweet shop founded by Kuwait-born Londoner Reshmi Bennett. Bennet trained in classical French cuisine in Paris at École Grégoire Ferrandi. Combining classic French techniques with flavours from around the world, Anges de Sucre offers a selection of jewel-like marshmallows and macarons, alongside their own sweet-inventions such as Muffles (marshmallow-truffle hybrid) and Tremendous Teacakes.

Crosstown Doughnuts Marylebone

Crosstown Doughnuts might have locations scattered across the capital, but did you know that its Marylebone location is exclusively vegan? Within, the team serves its signature sourdough doughnuts, all in a dairy-free environment. Our favourite treats include the Cinnamon Scroll (vegan sourdough rolled with cinnamon and covered in vanilla bean glaze) and the Peanut Butter Berry (vegan sourdough with blackcurrant compote, roasted peanut butter glaze and a sprinkle of roasted peanuts). Delicious.

Cutter & Squidge

Cutter & Squidge is run by two food-obsessed sisters, who describe themselves as “a bit health conscious and not fans of overly fatty or sugar-laden foods”. Therefore, it makes sense that most of their sweet creations only use just enough fat and sugar content to make something delicious. We’re a big fan of their ‘Biskies’ – a biscuit, cookie or cake sandwiched with lightened buttercream, homemade jam and caramel. Make sure to check out The Potion Room, a wizard and alchemy-fueled afternoon tea with an immersive element.

Dominique Ansel

The inventor of the ‘Cronut’, Dominique Ansel opened his celebrated bakery in New York's Soho neighbourhood in November 2011. Luckily for us, there’s now one in Victoria. Here, you’ll sit among the open kitchens, where you can watch the pastry chefs prepare their craft. The team’s sweet and savoury offerings might be rooted in French techniques, but there’s always an element of playfulness with the presentation (especially at Halloween – last year’s meringue ghosts were perfection).

E5 Bakehouse

E5 Bakehouse is an east London artisan bakery and coffee shop, with a focus on sourdough. Using organic, locally-sourced ingredients, the team serves daily-baked breads, fresh lunches, homemade cakes (the bakewell tart is to die for) and coffee from its own roast house. Inspired? Once a week, the head bakers share their knowledge and expertise in a weekly bread course – make sure to book ahead.

Nordic Bakery

Nordic Bakery is a beautiful Scandinavian-style café that serves simple, yet delicious Nordic baked goods. All dishes are based on genuine Nordic recipes and ingredients: among the highlights are the team’s selection of open rye bread sandwiches (we like brie and lingonberry), traditional cinnamon buns and chokladboll (chocolate mocha ball rolled in coconut), all served with excellent coffee.

Ole & Steen

Proving once more that Londoners can’t get enough of Nordic goods, Ole & Steen arrived in late-2016 with an all-day menu that celebrates the best of Denmark. Serving Danes delicious breads and pastries for over 20 years, the team’s new bakeries (found everywhere from St James’s Market to Canary Wharf) serve everything from morning porridge to blueberry pie. A SL favourite? The peanut pie slice.
