Queer Eye Is Back – Here’s What You Need To Know

Our favourite Fab Five are back on our screens this week, and series three promises to be even better than the last. This year they’re taking on a whole new bunch of ‘heroes’ and even heading to Japan – here’s what you need to know before it starts…

When is it back?

All hail the LQGBTQ+ Gods – Queer Eye season three returns to our screens this Friday, 15th March. They made the official announcement via their official Queer Eye Instagram account (where else?), complete with new Carly Rae Jepson soundtrack. Karamo Brown, Jonathan Van Ness, Antoni Porowski, Tan France and Bobby Berk will be heading to Kansas City, Missouri this time around.

What have the Fab Five been up to?

Those that have been following Jonathon’s ice-skating journey to becoming the next Michelle Kwan on Instagram, will probably be aware of his tour, Road to Beijing, which is inspired by the hair and grooming expert’s attempt to take his figure skating routine to the 2022 Winter Olympics in China. Meanwhile, Queer Eye’s resident food and wine expert Antoni has opened his first ‘fast-casual’ restaurant, The Village Den, in New York’s West Village. Interiors guru Bobby has been dishing out advice on how to make our homes and giving us major #InteriorsInspo on his Instagram. Culture expert Karamo has written a book entitled Karamo: My Story of Embracing Purpose, Healing, and Hope, in which he talks about his struggles with his identity. And he’s not the only one who’s been a busy wordsmith – Tan has also written a memoir called Naturally Tan, where he talks about what it was like to grow up gay in a traditional South Asian family and as one of the few people of colour in South Yorkshire.

What did the last series do?

Reboots generally garner a lot of hate from fans (seriously, name a good reboot – we’ll wait), but Queer Eye proved to be an exception to this rule. It’s like The Great British Bake Off: just nice TV. But it also managed to bring about important questions about masculinity in this format, without being overbearing. So rarely do we get to see a man opening up and crying on camera, and having other men comforting. It also sees the Fab Five addressing stereotypes some people have of them in a positive way. It currently holds a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It was also held in high esteem by critics – The Guardian said it was “one of the most important TV shows for a long, long time. What it is really about is masculinity and the problems it causes? It seems to me there is no more important subject on our planet right now."

Who’s in it this year?

The Fab Five are of course all back on top form this season. With regards to who they’ll be making over, they’ve widened the net a little – this time around, their ‘heroes’ will include their first lesbian and their first couple on the show. Tan said series three is “everything that you would've liked about [Queer Eye] Season 1 and 2 but amplified. Those heroes get me every week – it's the best experience. We have our first lesbian on the show this year and she's formidable. What we do with her, you're gonna love it.”

Plus, 2019 will also see the guys head to Japan for a four-episode special. Queer Eye: We’re In Japan! follows the gang to Tokyo to work their magic on four Japanese men and women, as they delve into Japanese culture, food, grooming, fashion and design.

Queer Eye season three will be available on Netflix on Friday 15th March. The four-episode Japan special will be available later in 2019.
