Best Places To Drink, Shop, Eat In Ealing

In 1902, Ealing became known as the ‘Queen of the Suburbs’ due to its vast greenery and its location halfway between the city and country. Today, that name remains, thanks to Ealing Common and nearby Walpole and Gunnersbury Parks, but there’s also loads to see and do, thanks to the newly restored Pitzhanger Manor and a wealth of decent restaurants and bars…

EAT

Charlotte's W5

Charlotte’s is a neighbourhood institution. Beginning life in nearby Chiswick, the team now has two newer sites in Ealing. The kitchen serves modern British food and drink from local and sustainable suppliers in a converted Victorian stable block at Dickens Yard in Ealing Broadway. Breakfast and brunch is served daily from 8am and from 12pm, while Charlotte’s famous ‘Early Diner’ offer serves three courses and an aperitif for £29.50. The restaurant was awarded a Bib Gourmand in the Michelin Guide in 2017 and 2018.

Santa Maria

Santa Maria is named after the street it resides on, St Mary’s Road. The famed restaurant is owned by Angelo and Pasquale, who decided to open their own space in 2010 after working in several restaurants and pizzerias across London. The couple are Neapolitan and obsessed with pizza: the wood-fired offerings served in Santa Maria are exactly the same as the pizza you can eat on the streets of Naples, using the same ingredients and adopting the same cooking method. We like the ‘Sant’anna’: tomato sauce, mozzarella, cotto ham, artichokes, black olives and parmesan.

WA Café

WA Café is a small, independent patisserie located in Ealing Broadway. In the kitchen, highly skilled Japanese bakers produce a selection of quintessentially Japanese breads and pastries each day. Colourful rows of pristine pastries sit alongside freshly baked buns and breads, while premium teas and quality coffee are served in beautiful crockery to complement the distinctly Japanese creations. We love the white sesame cheesecake.

Soane’s Kitchen

Soane’s Kitchen is the latest opening from Alex Head, founder of Social Pantry. Launched last summer, the restaurant’s all-day menu delivers light and comforting seasonal dishes that reflect Social Pantry’s signature style. As much produce as possible is grown in the kitchen garden, meaning that seasonality and crop availability also dictate the daily menu – highlights include burrata with broad beans and radish; grilled baby carrots with ricotta; and bavette steak with carrot-top pesto. On Sundays, brunch provides the perfect opportunity for long, lazy get-togethers with friends and family. Alongside bottomless drinks and a bloody Mary station, guests can expect views across the restaurant’s kitchen garden and the grounds of Pitzhanger Manor.

DRINK

No 17 Dickens Yard

The seventh location from Darwin & Wallace (which also runs No 29 Powerstation West at Battersea and No 197 Chiswick Fire Station), No 17 Dickens Yard is a bold, modern space, decked out with huge lamps, soft textiles, generous lounge seating, large bleached oak sharing tables plus a dedicated bar on both floors. Fronted with a large outdoor courtyard filled with foliage and terracotta, the space also boasts a wrap-around terrace on the first floor, which overlooks the newly landscaped Dickens Yard development. All cocktails use house-made syrups and herbs foraged from the bar’s own kitchen garden – we’re keen to try the ‘Honey Martini’.

Artisan Coffee

Artisan Coffee calls itself a ‘coffee-focused, fun-loving space that flirts with pushing design boundaries. Set up by owners Edwin and Magda in 2011, following a year in Uganda, the pair decided to swap the 9-5 for the 5-9, bringing great coffee to the south-west in the process. Each morning, granolas, pastries, porridge and smoked salmon on focaccia are all freshly prepared, while lunch focuses on seasonal soups, salads and tarts. The coffee itself comes from London roasters Curious Roo.

WHAT TO SEE & DO

Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery

In March 2019, Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery reopened to the public for the first time in over three years. The £12m project peeled back layers of history, extensions and overpainting, returning Pitzhanger to Sir John Soane’s original design, now visible for the first time in over 175 years. In 1939, Ealing’s public lending library was built on the site of Soane’s kitchen block. This has now been upgraded to create Pitzhanger Gallery, a beautiful display space flooded with natural light. The gallery will present three exhibitions a year. In its inaugural show, Anish Kapoor presents a series of sculptures, some previously unseen in Britain, which echo Soane’s complex use of mirrors and light to double and dissolve space.

Questors Theatre

This Ealing theatre is home of The Questors, a large theatre company which hosts around 20 productions a year, plus a full programme of guest productions, music and platform events. The season covers a wide range of theatre, including comedies, classics, modern drama and a family Christmas show. As well as exploring the mainstream of modern and classical world drama, The Questors has always been respected for championing new or rarely performed plays, and for encouraging experimentation. Whether or not you’re seeing a show, The Grapevine bar is a great spot for a drink.

At weekends, locals can take part in Parkrun, while summer sees Lovebox and Citadel festivals return for a full weekend of music and entertainment. Walpole Park

Walpole Park is located at the edge of Ealing Broadway, behind Pitzhanger Manor. The park is a much-used space in the heart of the borough and is the site of Ealing Summer Festival. It forms part of a larger network of green spaces which provide respite from the pressures of urban living whether it is for recreation, an alternative ‘rural’ pedestrian route or a location for alfresco dining. There’s also a small cafe and children’s playground. Ealing Council is in the process of restoring Walpole Park to its former Regency glory through a Heritage Lottery Funded project.
