In The Know: Cool Things For Parents & Kids

This month we’ve rounded up some of the best finds for mums and dads, guaranteed to keep children out of mischief and parents happy – from a new members club for kids to an app that doles out pocket money in exchange for chores…

Smart Infused Füd

Smart Infused Füd is a range of meals aimed at primary school children designed for optimum nutrition and brain function. The recipes go above and beyond ‘five-a-day’ thinking: they optimise key nutrients, vitamins and minerals studied for their benefits for cognitive function, concentration, energy, immune and nervous system support in children. The range consists of six dairy- and gluten-free meals, from vitamin A-rich sausage casserole to fishcakes full of omega 3. The little touches – barely discernible to children – have a real impact on their health, like the flaxseed coating on the fishcakes, or the miso paste in the lamb tagine. All meals are frozen to lock in goodness, popped in recyclable packaging and delivered to customers’ doors in biodegradable wool.

George Junior

The George Club in Mayfair has just launched its George Junior membership, offering kids their own benefits, special events throughout the year, inspiring competitions and a monthly newsletter. A ‘Kids Committee’ will see little people making big decisions, ranging from dishes served on the kids’ menu in the club, to charities and local community projects they could support. The committee will also touch on bigger issues, such as plastic waste, to discuss ways they think they can help to make a positive impact. George Junior members will receive a membership pack upon joining, including a book bag, hooded sweatshirt, baseball cap, George Junior cuddly dachshund and a membership card.

Gimi App

Gimi is a free pocket money and chores managing app. The app makes it easy for kids to practice how to earn, save and spend money, before managing real money later in life. Using Gimi, parents can set up a recurring weekly or monthly allowance for their child; set chores for their children to earn additional money (children can also suggest chores to them too) and create savings, all while teaching kids about interest rates. In turn, kids are able to spend money they’ve earned through good behaviour, jobs completed around the house and goals set around their school work; set up dream buys (such as a skateboard); and monitor how long it will take them to get there. A must.

Kew’s Children’s Garden

Kew Garden’s newest garden – designed for children from two to 12 years old – opened this month. Based in a natural setting the size of 40 tennis courts, children can explore all the things plants need to grow; earth, air, sun and water. The playground features 100 mature trees, hidden treasures and adventures around every corner, leading to a 4m-high canopy walk wrapped around a 200-year-old oak in the middle of the garden. We like the look of the Earth Garden, where children can weave through a living bamboo tunnel, explore a jungle of large leafed palms and slide down 'worm-hole' tubes. Visitors will be allocated a time for a 90-minute session, on a first-come, first-served basis.

Lots of Lovely Art

Lots of Lovely Art provides an art box full of great supplies for children of all ages, bringing a regular experience of art and artists into their lives through the letterbox. Each box celebrates an overall theme with three relevant artists to inspire and enhance creativity. Each delivery contains three artist-inspired activities and four creative process ideas. Although the art projects are aimed at girls and boys aged four-12, the team offers tips on how to adapt each project for under fours. Quality art materials are included – a generous amount for one child with leftovers to build up your art supplies at home.

The Mummy Lessons by Helen Wallen

After a tough pregnancy, Emily is determined to tackle motherhood like a pro. But she quickly learns that Insta-Perfect-Parenting (and sleep) is hard to come by, no matter how much money you spend in Mothercare. Irritatingly, her friend Molly seems to be breezing it. But with a business venture as well as a baby, is she taking on too much? Liz looks as though she might have it all worked out. But when a tragedy derails her new relationship, she has some serious decisions to make. Celebrating female friendship, the highs and lows of motherhood, and the lifesaving power of a jumperoo, The Mummy Lessons follows a year of highs and lows for Emily, Molly and Liz as they learn the hardest lesson of all: life doesn't always follow the rules.
