HAVE A BEAUTY BRUNCH HERE: B&H Garden Room

This month, John Frieda has teamed up with Bourne & Hollingsworth to create its ‘Weightless’ brunch experience. The events include a two-course meal, cocktail, unlimited hot drinks and an exclusive John Frieda goody bag worth over £40, plus a chance to win a sunrise champagne hot air balloon ride for two. Taking place every weekend this month, this Sunday the brunch will be hosted by model and beauty blogger Ruth Crilly and beauty editor Nadine Baggott. The pair will co-host a 20-minute discussion covering some of the expert beauty tips and tricks they’ve amassed over their years in the industry, and sharing insights on the products that have transformed their beauty regimes. Diners will have an opportunity to pick their brains with a ten-minute Q&A after the talk.

SEE A NEW EXHIBITION HERE: Dulwich Picture Gallery

Dulwich Picture Gallery’s latest exhibition explores the pioneering printmakers who captured the spirit of 1930s Britain. Bringing together 120 prints, drawing and posters, Cutting Edge features iconic works from Claude Flight and eight of his leading students including Sybil Andrews, Cyril Power, Lill Tschudi, William Greengrass and Leonard Beaumont. Cutting Edge champions the medium of the block-print linocut, which influential teacher and artist Claude Flight described as “an art of the people” due to its affordability and accessibility. Highlighting the radically changing times of the interwar period, the exhibition will explore themes of transport, speed and movement, industry and labour, sport and leisure, as well as showcasing the original tools, lino blocks and studies that revolutionised the printmaking process.

Gallery Road, Dulwich, SE21 7AD; until 8th September

EAT HERE: Flat Iron

Flat Iron has expanded, this time opening a restaurant in Spitalfields. The best thing about the brand is that it keeps the menu minimal: besides a few specials on the board, you can choose between ‘The Flat Iron Steak’ or the bavette; the former is more tender, while the latter has more flavour. You simply tell them how you like it cooked, and it’s as easy as that. For sides, we like the moreish aubergine with parmesan, basil and tomato (which also comes as a main for vegetarians), dripping chips and an off-menu, seasonal offer of plump, salty tomatoes. If you have room, you must try the sticky toffee pudding, crunchy round the edges and deliciously soft and sweet in the middle, you won’t regret going up a belt loop for this one.

TRY A NEW CHILDREN’S MENU HERE: Kricket

To mark the arrival of the summer holidays, Kricket has launched its first children’s menu at its Television Centre restaurant. Famed for creating Indian-inspired dishes using the best of seasonal British ingredients, Kricket’s kids menu offers a selection of toned-down dishes, still Indian in essence but more accessible for younger tastebuds: think Keralan fried chicken served with fresh ketchup and curry leaf mayonnaise; breaded haddock fingers with coconut; and a mild, fragrant chicken butter masala. Sides include rice, cheese naan, desi fries and tenderstem broccoli. Delicious.

MAKE COCKTAILS HERE: Murder Inc

Murder Inc is the latest offering from the team behind The Cocktail Trading Company in Shoreditch. Taking inspiration from the gangster noir era of the 1940s and 50s, the décor and style of the bar mixes industrial New York with mid-century glamour. New for August, the team has launched a series of cocktail masterclasses. Recognising the problem with many cocktail masterclasses – most show you a couple of fancy techniques in a setting you’re never going to encounter again – these workshops are filled with genuinely useful tips and tricks for making drinks at home. Participants will be taught five key principles, before being left to create a drink of their choosing, putting these concepts in place to see that they really work.
