The 10 Best Egg Dishes In London

LA’s Eggslut has just landed in Notting Hill, but it needs to know the local competition isn’t going to just lie down. From the best places to start the day right to substantial, protein-rich suppers, here are ten of our favourite egg-based dishes in the capital...

The Wolseley Fishcake at The Wolseley

While the classic eggs benedict is a must-have, we love to order the Wolseley smoked haddock fishcake. Available in two sizes, it comes on steamed spinach and topped with a perfectly poached egg and a dash of hollandaise sauce. Ideal for anyone who loves to start their morning with something savoury.

Where to eat it: The late AA Gill’s favourite restaurant, this Piccadilly institution is a hit with media types. Set in a grand art-deco room, breakfast here includes freshly baked items from its viennoiserie (think butter or almond croissants) alongside classic dishes such as caramelised pink grapefruit and creamed porridge oats with apricot compote.

Marmite Crumpets at 45 Jermyn St

We’re massive fans of this umami-laden dish. Two thickly coated Marmite crumpets come topped with a fried duck egg each. Running it a very close second, ‘Scrambling Prawns’ is silky scrambled eggs tossed with prawns, served with a side of sourdough toast.

Where to eat it: This beautiful restaurant from the team behind Fortnum & Mason is a popular breakfast destination for team meetings and in-the-know tourists alike. Around the corner from the famous department store, this stylish spot features cosy burnt-orange booths and sociable bar-top tables. Start the day with a healthy juice (we like the ‘ABC’ – that’s apple, beetroot and carrot) before turning to something a little more indulgent.

Filled Naan Bread at Dishoom

Dishoom’s most famous breakfast item is quite rightly its filled naan bread. Each naan is freshly baked – by hand, to order – in a tandoor oven, before being crammed with cream cheese, chilli tomato jam, smoked streaky bacon and two free-range fried eggs. Delicious.

Where to eat it: Now seven restaurants strong, the Dishoom group continues to pull in the crowds, even on early mornings, when it serves one of the capital’s best-rated breakfast items – filled naan breads. Whether you opt for spiced porridge or eggs, be sure to start the day with a traditional breakfast lassi.

The Aquavit Breakfast at Aquavit London

For a true Swedish experience, the ‘Aquavit Breakfast’ offers eggs of your choice, blood pudding, bacon, raggmunk (potato pancakes), sausage and mushrooms. We think a soft-boiled egg is the way to go with this one – and make sure to order plenty of Johan & Nyström coffee on the side.

Where to eat it: This Michelin-starred Swedish restaurant serves copious amounts of its eponymous spirit by night, then makes up for it the next morning. Rich in omega-3, its breakfast menu includes the likes of smoked eel benedict, grilled kipper with poached eggs, and smoked salmon with eggs and avocado.

Eggs Royale Toast at Avobar

When it comes to breakfast at Avobar, we recommend the ‘Eggs Royale Toast’: sourdough topped with poached eggs and homemade ‘avodaise’ rather than traditional hollandaise sauce. A fun twist on a classic.

Where to eat it: Avobar is an all-day drinking and dining destination serving wholesome and healthy dishes from breakfast through to dinner. Launched in 2018, it serves up an eclectic mix of fresh dishes, each with its own avocado twist. Importantly, the team makes sure each avocado is ethically and sustainably sourced.

Shakshuka at Nopi

If you’re a fan of baked eggs, you need to order the shakshuka, which is given a twist by the addition of smoked labneh, a traditional Lebanese soft cheese. Trust us, it’s up there with the very best shakshukas in London.

Where to eat it: The flavours of this Yotam Ottolenghi restaurant really pack a punch, but Nopi’s interiors tone down its Middle Eastern influence, paying homage to its heritage through clean subtleties: it’s all about glossy white floors and even glossier white tables.

The Fairfax at Eggslut

‘The Fairfax’ is  a piled-high sandwich made from soft scrambled eggs and cheese, served in a brioche bun. Those after an Instagram experience should order ‘The Slut’, a poached egg on top of a smooth potato purée, poached in a glass jar and served with baguette slices.

Where to eat it: Already one of the most popular casual-dining destinations in California, high-end egg concept Eggslut has opened in a prime spot on Portobello Road. This first UK site serves Eggslut’s fresh made-to-order eggs using the highest-quality, locally sourced ingredients such as cage-free Clarence Court eggs and Bread Ahead dough.

Squid Ink Flatbreads at Black Axe Mangal

Proving he’s not all about meat, chef Lee Tiernan’s hero dish is the squid-ink flatbreads with smoked cod’s roe, complete with egg yolk and edible glitter. It’s an Instagram hit for a reason, but lives up to the hype with bold flavours and a moreish texture.

Where to eat it: Black Axe Mangal combines innovative open-fire cooking and underused ingredients with a bold aesthetic, influenced by Tiernan’s love of music and skate culture. He’s best known for signature dishes such as pig's cheek and prune doughnuts, and shrimp-encrusted pigs’ tails.

Chopped Egg Salad at Brat

Alongside fresh, charcoal-grilled fish and a seriously extensive wine and sherry list, the one dish most diners order is the chopped egg salad. Served with slices of bottarga (salted, cured cod’s roe), this is a pretty plate that really packs a punch.

Where to eat it: Acclaimed ex-Kitty Fisher’s head chef Tomos Parry is the man behind Brat. Located above Smoking Goat in Shoreditch, this seafood-focused grill – named Brat after the old English word for turbot – is inspired by the restaurants of northern Spain, especially those in the Basque Country around San Sebastian.

Hoppers at Hoppers

Yes, it’s rather obvious, but make sure to try one of the restaurant’s namesakes. Of all the hoppers on the menu, we love the one topped with aubergine kari. It’s one of the best veggie dishes in Soho.

Where to eat it: Another award-winning eatery from the Sethi family, who also own Trishna and Gymkhana, Hoppers is one of the very best Sri Lankan restaurants in the city. Aptly named after one of Sri Lanka’s popular dishes – egg-topped pancakes – Hoppers offers a menu brimming with flavour.
