SEE A HIT PLAY HERE: Old Vic
A shocking assassination in London. In a bizarre mix of high-stakes global politics and radioactive villainy, a man pays with his life. At this time of global crises and a looming new Cold War, A Very Expensive Poison sends us careering through the shadowy world of international espionage from Moscow to Mayfair. John Crowley (Brooklyn, The Goldfinch) directs a reimagining by Lucy Prebble (The Effect, Enron) of Luke Harding’s jaw-dropping exposé of the events behind the notorious death of ex-FSB officer Alexander Litvinenko.
Old Vic, The Cut, Waterloo, SE1 8NB; until 5th October
EXTEND YOUR WEEKEND HERE: Plateau
Plateau in Canary Wharf has launched a ‘Spritz Flicks’ outdoor cinema experience in partnership with French aperitif brand Lillet. For the next three Mondays, the pair will offer dinner with a film and snacks. This Monday’s screening is teen comedy 10 Things I Hate About You; then it’s Four Weddings and a Funeral on 7th October. On the restaurant terrace, which has panoramic views across Canary Wharf and beyond, guests will sit down to a two-course meal before cosying up under blankets for the evening’s film with homemade popcorn, a bag of pick ’n’ mix and a spritz cocktail. Starters will include salt cod beignets with saffron aioli; heritage beetroot, caramelised goats’ cheese and watercress salad; and ham hock terrine. HAVE A SLEEPOVER HERE: The Biltmore Mayfair
The Biltmore Mayfair is a new 307-room hotel that combines contemporary accommodation, views across the gardens of Grosvenor Square and a dining space by Michelin-starred restaurateur Jason Atherton. Guests looking for an elegant escape can book into one of the 57 beautiful suites, where – for special occasions – the hotel can lay on personalised embroidered pillowcases and monogrammed bathrobes. Toiletries by Penhaligon’s are provided in all bathrooms. Instead of a traditional minibar, guests who reserve one of the hotel’s eight signature suites will have access to a quilted, leather-encased cabinet holding full-size bottles of champagne. We’re most excited about in-house restaurant The Betterment, which features a seasonally driven menu filled with locally sourced fish dishes, wood-fired meats and plenty of plant-based options. Elsewhere, the Pine Bar serves up classic cocktails and home-cured charcuterie, while the Tea Lounge is the place to enjoy afternoon tea.

WATCH THIS: The Farewell
Billi (Awkwafina) is called back from New York to her native China because her grandmother is dying. In accordance with tradition, this news is kept from the matriarch herself. Keeping up the pretence of a family wedding while reconnecting and grieving, we follow Billi on a funny, deeply moving exploration of the meaning of home and family. Having proved herself a scene stealer in Crazy Rich Asians, Awkwafina steps outside her brash persona to deliver a layered performance that marks her out as a serious dramatic talent.

BE A VIP HERE: Berenjak
We can’t get enough of this rustic hole-in-the-wall eatery. Brought to you by the people behind Michelin-starred Gymkhana, it’s perfect for a posh kabab and flavourful mazeh sharing plates. The restaurant is named after the handfuls of brightly coloured toasted rice eaten as a snack at funfairs in Iran. Ducking through a reimagined Persian shopfront, you’ll be greeted by an open kitchen, giving a full view of the chefs manning the flaming tanoor, mangal BBQ and vertical rotisserie. For the rest of the month, SL VIPs get 20% off the total bill. Not yet a member? Sign up using the link below.

BOOK TICKET FOR THIS: William Blake at the Tate
William Blake was a painter, printmaker and poet who created some of the most iconic images in British art. Radical and rebellious, he is an inspiration to visual artists, musicians, poets and performers worldwide. Inside this new exhibition at the Tate is an immersive recreation of the small domestic room in which Blake showed his art in 1809. Visitors can experience something of the impact these works had when they were shown for the first time. In another room, Blake’s dream of showing his works at enormous scale will be made real using digital technology. With over 300 original works, including his watercolours, paintings and prints, this is the largest show of Blake’s work for almost 20 years. A must-visit.
Millbank, Westminster, SW1P 4RG; until 2nd February
