The End Of The F…ing World – Series 1 & 2, Netflix

Based on the comic book series by Charles Forsman, The End of the F...ing World sees two 17-year-old outsiders, James and Alyssa, embark on a road trip to find her estranged father, who left home when she was just a child. Meanwhile James, who is convinced he’s a psychopath, has decided it’s time to graduate from killing animals to something bigger – and he already has a target in mind.

Earthquake Bird, Netflix

Earthquake Bird is an unsettling and atmospheric thriller from director Wash Westmoreland (Colette, Still Alice). Set in 1989 Tokyo, the film follows Lucy Fly (Alicia Vikander), an enigmatic ex-pat haunted by a painful past, who enters into an intense relationship with Teiji (Naoki Kobayashi), a handsome yet similarly troubled local photographer. Lucy’s imperturbable exterior begins to crack when a naive newcomer, Lily Bridges (Riley Keough), becomes entangled in their lives and ends up missing – suspected dead.

The Crown – Series 3, Netflix

This much-loved drama follows the political rivalries and romance of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign and the events that shaped the second half of the 20th century. As we enter series three, the Queen (Olivia Colman) faces a rapidly changing Britain, as her family continues to struggle with the needs of the monarchy and the wants of their fracturing personal lives. Also stars Helena Bonham Carter and Tobias Menzies.

The Irishman, Netflix

Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci star in Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman, an epic saga of organised crime in post-war America told through the eyes of World War 2 veteran Frank Sheeran, a hustler and hitman. Spanning decades, the film chronicles one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in American history – the disappearance of legendary union boss Jimmy Hoffa – and offers a monumental journey through the hidden corridors of organised crime, tracking its inner workings, rivalries and connections to mainstream politics.

The King, Netflix

Prince Hal (TimothĂ©e Chalamet) is a reluctant heir to the English throne who’s turned his back on his destiny to live among the people. But when his tyrannical father (Ben Mendelsohn) dies, Hal is crowned King Henry V and forced to embrace the life he tried to escape. Loosely based on William Shakespeare’s eight play-strong Henriad series, which spans Richard II to Henry V, The King weaves together both Shakespearian and real-life 15th-century characters to create a visually pleasing film with a pacy, accessible plot.

American Son, Netflix

It’s 3am on a rainy night in South Florida. Mother Kendra Ellis-Connor (Kerry Washington) paces anxiously in a police station waiting room as she tries to piece together what may have happened to her missing son. Faced with a series of infuriating unanswered questions, she navigates a system of unconscious bias, interweaving perspectives, and a tense marital dynamic with her ex-husband (Steven Pasquale) as they try to uncover the truth about their son’s whereabouts.

In 1985, a Cleveland grandfather was brought to trial in Israel, accused of being the infamous Nazi death camp guard known as Ivan the Terrible. This five-part series is one that true-crime fans can really get stuck into.

Brittany Runs a Marathon, Amazon Prime Video

New Yorker Brittany Forgler is everybody’s best friend – except maybe her own. At 27, her hard-partying ways, chronic underemployment and toxic relationships are catching up with her. When she stops by a new doctor’s office to try to score some Adderall, she gets slapped with a prescription she never wanted: getting healthy. Too broke for a gym and too proud to ask for help, she laces up her trainers and runs one sweaty block. The next day, she runs two. Soon, she sets an almost unthinkable goal: running the New York City Marathon.

Jones’s relentless pursuit of the truth leads to explosive findings that uncover the lengths to which the nation’s top intelligence agency went to destroy evidence, subvert the law and hide a brutal secret from the American public. Based on a true story, this is a riveting watch.
