How To Get Wedding Favours Right

How To Get Wedding Favours Right

Wedding favours are such a personal thing – and done right, they add a memorable touch to your big day. Get it wrong, however, and they’re more likely to end up in the bin than going home with your guests. Along with some of our favourite ideas, here are the dos and don’ts to bear in mind…

DO Think About Food & Drink

Something to eat or drink will always go down well with your guests. Choose these favours based on what you love, places you’ve been, or purely to please a crowd. “Edible floral lollipops are one of my favourite favours. They are so pretty and can tie in with your wedding colours,” says Jemma-Jade William, founder of Jemma-Jade Events. Miniature bottles of olive oil or limoncello are a lovely gift either at home or for a destination wedding, or choose chocolate and sweets – these are always bound go down well. Fortune cookies will get your guests chatting; individual bags of popcorn are a delicious treat; or for a countryside or farm wedding, some homemade jam or mini honey pots are a cute and tasty gift.

Personalised beer with the date of the wedding and couples’ names can also be a quirky and funny favour, or choose sloe gin, which can be made in the months leading up to the wedding. If you know your guests are coffee lovers, give them coffee beans in a bespoke pouch. Tea drinkers will appreciate personalised tea gifts, too.

DO Think Outside The Box

Give your guests something memorable when they arrive at the reception – it will help kick-start chat with other guests they might not know. “Personalised candles for guests to take home are a gorgeous gift – and perfect for winter or an Alpine wedding,” advises Lavinia Stewart-Brown, director of Stewart-Brown Events. “Survival kits filled with all the necessities (headache tablets, chewing gum, eye mask, etc) are a fun and useful favour,” adds Jemma-Jade. Personalised hand sanitiser is great for the current time, or if you're having a summer or destination wedding, give your guests personalised fans. Mini succulents are a sustainable idea, or choose flower seeds, scratch cards, or handkerchiefs for something different. “Flower seed packets with the wedding date and couples’ names on are a really lovely idea,” says Jemma-Jade. Lavinia adds: “If you’re keen to make sure your favours are sustainable, mini plants such as olive trees for the guests to take away are great. Try adding a sweet message such as ‘Let Love Grow’.”

DON’T Forget About The Table

Remember, your favours can always double up as table décor. Personalised coasters, glass charms and place cards can look pretty and make gorgeous gifts, while monogrammed embroidered napkins, bottle stoppers and customised straws are practical and cute. “Personalised coasters are a lovely keepsake. They may be costly, depending on the material, but they are something the guests can use forever,” says Lavinia.

DON’T Ignore Children

There’s no doubt younger guests will get bored at some point during the celebrations. Apart from giving them their own table and food they’ll love, leave them with plenty to do to keep them happy. Many companies produce wedding gift sets for children including colouring books, pencils and quizzes – or go for craft sets like friendship bracelet kits or peg doll sets. Sticker books will keep younger children amused while packs of cards or magic sets will better suit older children.
