The Sunday Night Routines 10 Successful Women Swear By

Face masks, a good book and an early night may be our intention, but all too often Sunday nights end up being a bit of a mad rush. Who better to inspire you to change your habits than these 10 successful women.

Yulia Rorstrom, Founder & CEO, Duck & Dry

In 2014, Yulia Rorstrom opened the doors to Duck & Dry's flagship blow-dry and hair salon. Thanks to meticulous attention to detail, bright and beautiful interiors, feel-good vibes and a buzzy atmosphere, it proved to be an instant success. Six years on, the business has launched sister brands Duck & File and Duck & Pluck – brow and nail bars with the same experiential ethos

“Sunday is about winding down and planning the week ahead. My favourite part of the evening is family time, usually watching a movie with the children. After their bedtime I have a long indulgent bath and a glass of wine. My husband will often make dinner – he is a much better cook than me! Before bed I make a to-do list for the week ahead. It’s always on paper and usually has two columns – one for the urgent ‘must do’ points and the other for bigger targets throughout the week – whether that’s new product testing, shooting content or planning the next Duck & Dry growth opportunity.”

Alexandra Daly, CEO, AA Advisors

Alexandra Daly is founder and CEO of investment firm AA Advisors and chair of the government-backed Council for Investing in Female Entrepreneurs

“Sundays are an important time to prepare for the week ahead. I will look through my diary and make time to read up ahead of any important meetings. I’ll also take into account any work-related reports I have to be up to speed with and prepare accordingly. This is better not only for my own performance, but also for those I’m meeting – everybody’s time is precious, and it’s respectful to attend a meeting fully prepared. We have a global client base and cover both Asia and the US, as well as Australia, so my working day can often be a long one. Otherwise, Sundays are a time to relax and reset. As we head into winter, I like to spend the day with my family. In the evenings, I like to run myself a bath. It helps to balance my mind and get ready for bed. Sleep is so important; I’m an early riser so I like to make sure I have an early night. Prioritising my sleep helps my mind stay fresh and be in the best shape to tackle the challenges of the week ahead.”

Elizabeth Tweedale, Founder & CEO, Cypher

As founder and CEO of Cypher, Elizabeth Tweedale is on a mission to get children (especially young girls) interested in computer coding. She was also the only woman on the coding team who helped construct Apple's Californian headquarters, before leaving to set up her own venture.

“Sundays are the perfect opportunity to reboot and set new goals for the week ahead. Following lunch and a family walk, I prep everything for my kids, so we aren’t in a hurry to get to school in the morning. I also look at everyone’s schedules, so I can visualise the week. After that, I check my own work schedule and prioritise some tasks for Monday, which I then share with all my colleagues. Everyone in the team does the same, something we have found incredibly useful while working from home. I then drop off my eldest son, Jaeden, at boarding school. The night ends with me giving the remaining two girls a bath, before reading them a bedtime story. When the kids are tucked up and settled, I unwind by having a bath.”

Louise Winmill, Partner, Portland Communications

Since starting out as a professional dancer and earning a degree in economics from University College London, Louise has advised some of the world’s best-known brands including Netflix, L’Oreal, Coca Cola and Snapchat. Having made partner at Portland Communications aged just 35, she now leads an 80-strong team.

“My brain starts getting into work mode by mid-afternoon, so I take a bit of time to get ahead. I clear my inbox, write to-do lists and plan my week. At the moment, I’m using my days in London to see clients, journalists and colleagues, while my time at home is spent just getting my head down. Starting the week knowing I’m on top of things makes Monday mornings much less stressful. It’s then about relaxing. I’ll read with and put the children to bed before pouring a glass of red and getting stuck into Netflix. I’m currently loving the third season of Ozark. I should then go to bed to get an early-ish night, but I admit I end up scrolling on Instagram. I have a mild addiction to WeAreTwinset and the TheFashionablePan’s accounts right now. By the time Monday morning rolls round, I like to exercise first thing – so I make sure I’ve chosen a home workout that I can literally roll out of bed to do. Charlee Atkins has some brilliant HIIT and dumbbell workouts on Fitbit, which I’ve been doing religiously through lockdown.”

Margo Marrone, Founder & CEO, The Organic Pharmacy

Having worked in her local chemist as a teenager, Margo Marrone opened the first Organic Pharmacy store on London’s Kings Road in 2002. The brand’s products are now sold in more than 36 countries.

“I usually have a bath – I’ve learnt that bathing is really important for my self-care and wellbeing. I always use my favourite bath oil, The Organic Pharmacy Jasmine Bath Oil, and as I soak I forget all about the stress and strains of the week. I also apply a thick layer of The Organic Pharmacy Enzyme Peel Mask, so that my skin is refreshed and glowing for the week ahead. Then, I spritz my face with a misting of Jasmine Night Conditioner and follow with Retinol Night Serum, Antioxidant Serum and Gel. Finally, I make a cup of chamomile tea and it’s off to bed.”

Maria Hatzistefanis, Founder, Rodial

London-based beauty entrepreneur Maria Hatzistefanis founded skincare group Rodial in 1999. Two brands – Rodial and Nip + Fab – are now sold at 20,000 outlets across 35 countries including Saks Fifth Avenue, Space NK, Harvey Nichols and Harrods. She is also the author of two how-to books designed to encourage female entrepreneurs.

“On Sunday nights I like to focus on my skincare regime, as I have more time than in the week. I double cleanse with the Rodial Pink Diamond Cleansing Balm followed by the Dragon’s Blood Cleansing Water, so my skin is completely clean. I also have a bath with Epsom Salts while wearing the Rodial Dragon’s Blood Jelly Patches to really plump up my eye area. I normally watch a show on Netflix to relax while I do another sheet mask. Before bed I use collagen drops mixed with Dragon’s Blood Night Cream to allow my skin to repair overnight. I am normally asleep by 10pm as I like to wake up early.”

Nikki Tibbles, Founder, Wild at Heart

Nikki Tibbles is one of the most celebrated florists in the UK, renowned for her opulent, visionary and creative approach to flowers, weddings and events. Her sought-after style has earned her several accolades over the years, as well as an A-list following and commissions from some of the world’s most luxurious brands and venues – including Liberty London.

“After a long walk with my four rescue dogs and a pub lunch with friends, I like to spend the evenings catching up with the Sunday newspapers and playing Scrabble. I’ve usually had a hectic week, so for me Sunday evening is a night to relax and prepare for the week ahead. If I have time, I take a pampering bath, put on my favourite Asceno pyjamas and sit in front of a roaring log fire, surrounded by my dogs – happily exhausted and reading yet another crime novel.”

Samata, CEO, Red Carpet Green Dress

A British-born Ghanaian entrepreneur, Samata is CEO of Suzy Amis Cameron’s Red Carpet Green Dress campaign, which aims to showcase sustainable fashion on the red carpet at the Oscars every year. A former fashion editor at The Talent magazine, she is also editor of SamataHome.com.

''I have a young family, so it’s important to spend some uninterrupted time with my husband and son at the weekend – it actually leaves me feeling more revitalised for the week ahead. On a Sunday evening, I look at both my family and work calendar to see where I can create extra personal time around my schedule. Our team works across multiple continents, so I check to see if meetings are booked in too late or starting too early. I don’t want them to take away from putting my son to bed or us eating breakfast as a family. I recently picked up a new habit, suggested by a good friend, of writing one letter or card a week, and posting it to someone. Connecting in this old-fashioned way hopefully brings a smile to the recipient’s face. Finally, I like to watch something to unwind before bed – my current favourites are The Duchess or anything by Sebastian Maniscalco.”

Suzy Ashworth, Business Coach

Suzy Ashworth is a mum of three, a serial entrepreneur, Hay House author and an international keynote speaker helping female entrepreneurs create breakthroughs in their business. She runs a number of retreats and events including Limitless Live, an annual one-day event which connects, inspires and motivates women to take themselves and their businesses to the next level.

“My Sunday night starts after we get some peace and quiet from our three children. On a good night, that tends to be around 8:30pm. I’ll then take 30-60 minutes for my own learning and development – completing whatever course I’m signed up to at the time. Then I will hop into the sauna and meditate for half an hour, before taking a look at what has been scheduled for the week ahead. I wind down fully by listening to a book on Audible before going to bed.”

Whitney Bromberg Hawkings, Co-Founder & CEO, FLOWERBX

A one-time PA to Tom Ford who worked her way up to SVP of communications at his label, Whitney Bromberg Hawkings founded flower delivery service FLOWERBX in 2015. Already one of the most well-known florists globally, the brand is gearing up to launch its service on the US West Coast this year.

“As the kids tackle their homework pile on Sunday afternoon, I catch up on any unread emails so I can start the week with a clean slate. I also create a list of clear objectives for myself during the week – all of which I like to have ticked off by Friday night. It’s said that Jackie O always dedicated one evening a week to self-care, and this is always a Sunday evening for me. Someone from the Ruuby app comes to my house, and does a manicure, pedicure, lashes and my brows for me. Once that’s done (along with a good blow dry), I feel ready to tackle the week ahead.”
