The Plastic-Free Beauty Buys We Love

The Plastic-Free Beauty Buys We Love

The beauty industry alone produces up to 142 billion units of packaging every year, with heaps of plastic clogging up landfill and polluting the ocean. Thankfully, many brands are making strides to minimise their waste in a bid to become more environmentally-friendly. Here, we share our favourite cruelty and plastic-free buys.

1

Bybi Babe Balm, £30.98

Packaging Credentials: Created in a biodegradable sugarcane tube, this cult Babe Balm is sustainable, as well as eco-friendly – the brand transports all their ingredients through carbon-neutral couriers to cut down on CO2 emissions. As for the rest of their products, the clever website demonstrates exactly how each tube can be recycled, so you’re never confused or tempted to thoughtlessly throw anything away.

Why We Love It: Lightweight and silky, this luminous cream gives skin a dewy quality that we (and industry insiders) love. Nourishing dry, parched skin with Brazilian oils and sweet potato extract, mix it with your primer or foundation for a bit more glow – a great multi-purpose buy.

Wild Natural Deodorant, From £25

Packaging Credentials: Deodorant is one of the most wasteful products we use, hence why innovative brand Wild decided to launch one that ticks all the eco-boxes. Not only are their plastic-free, refillable deodorants made from bamboo pulps, the formulas are all free from aluminium and parabens – so you get the most natural results possible. They’ve also partnered with On A Mission, who fund reforestation projects across the world.

Why We Love It: From rose blush, to mint fresh and bergamot rituals, there are plenty of beautiful fragrances to choose from. What’s more, it has a creamy texture that isn’t sticky or too wet – unlike other natural formulas – and the protection lasts for hours.

Codex Beauty Skin Superfood, £48

Packaging Credentials: Codex’s clever plant-based tubes have been created using sugarcane ethanol. Put simply, this is a renewable, raw material that when produced, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, in turn, helping clear the atmosphere and environment. The brand is also 98% organic, using only the very best ingredients to care for your skin.

Why We Love It: Forget buying individual creams for your hands, body and face. This nifty formula targets all these areas at once, using rich, nourishing ingredients. A generous layer will help take down redness, improve the texture of your skin and boost moisture within days. Great for sensitive skin types.

Kjaer Weis Glow Duo Compact, £41

Packaging Credentials: Kjaer Weis was one of the first brands to launch refillable packaging, and they continue to commit to the plastic-free cause to this day. With the knowledge that 56% of Brits don’t recycle their bathroom products due to the perceived inconvenience, the brand aims to simplify your regime with metal compacts that can be stocked up with cartridge refills (which are made from recycled paper).

Why We Love It: Our favourite product is this beautiful, weighty Glow compact. Housing both a cream blush and highlight, each shade blends seamlessly for a healthy-looking luminosity that lasts. Packaging Credentials: Larry King’s ethos is all about merging the benefits of sustainability and luxury, with most of his products designed to be recycled afterwards – including this aluminium tube. On top of that, each product comes in a box created with wildflower seeds. Why? So that when the carton is thrown out, it will sow some new flowers as it biodegrades.

Why We Love It: Loved by A-listers, this does-it-all styling cream is lightweight, while still creating volume and texture. It enhances shine, tames frizz and can be used to give your hair more of a polished finish. Scrunch it into your hair when it’s dry for best results – just remember a little goes a long way.

UpCircle Body Scrub Coffee & Tangerine, £14.99

Packaging Credentials: Housed in recyclable, aluminium tubes, UpCircle’s entire range is plastic-free, while their vegan formulas are suitable for all skin types. They also repurpose their coffee grounds from London cafés, while the packaging itself has no plastic lining – instead, it’s sealed with a fold instead of glue.

Why We Love It: Rich in hydrating essential oils, this gritty scrub refines skin without removing any moisture from it. Buff it on in circular motions and you’ll soon see how quickly it improves texture and tone, getting rid of the very top surface of dead, dull skin.

Vanderohe No1 Nourishing Face Serum, £88

Packaging Credentials: Vanderohe is a brand that never compromises on luxury, while still delivering on its eco-friendly promise. All their products are housed in plastic-free packaging, while the dark violet glass (which is recyclable) preserves the potency of the ingredients inside. The products are hand-created, too, in small batches, using 100% organic ingredients.

Why We Love It: Formulated with high-grade plant oils, this unguent serum sinks straight into the skin, reducing redness and delivering moisture deep down. The ingredients are impressive too – Chilean rosehip oil smooths texture and fades pigmentation, while antimicrobial geranium is ideal for those looking to reduce scarring and breakouts. Expensive, but the results are worth it.
