Makeup Tips For An Uneven Skin Tone

Makeup Tips For An Uneven Skin Tone

As you age, uneven skin tone is something you have to learn to deal with – redness, varying texture and pigmentation are all just par for the course. Thankfully, there’s plenty you can do to cheat your way to better skin. Here, SL Beauty Insider Adeola Gboyega shares her tips to do just that.

Prep & Prime

A primer is the first step in achieving flawless-looking skin and creating a smooth canvas for make-up. The key thing to remember is not all primers are made equal, and it’s so important to choose a primer based on your individual needs. Whether you have fine lines, open pores or uneven skin texture, there’s a primer out there for you.

Colour Correcting

Colour correcting pigments are essential to help neutralise a multitude of uneven skin tone concerns, such as redness, dark under eye circles and pigmentation. They're highly recommended if you find wearing foundation or concealer alone isn't enough to minimise discolouration. The best way to use a corrector is to apply it to the targeted area, and following up with your chosen foundation or concealer afterwards.

The colour you choose should be based on the colour of your discolouration. For example, if you have redness, choose a green corrector, while those with darker skin tones with brown spots, or brown dark circles, should use a peach-based corrector. A pink-based corrector works best on those with a fairer skin tone, to help correct blue or purple discolouration under the eyes.

Choose A Skin Perfecting Base

A base with added skincare benefits can help improve the overall appearance of your complexion. Formulas that combine make-up with skincare not only give you healthy, fresh-looking skin, they also improve the quality of your skin over time. Look out for breathable, lightweight formulas, as it’s better to apply a thin, even layer of foundation all over and then add more coverage where it’s needed. If you suffer from uneven skin, there is a tendency to go for a full coverage foundation everywhere, but that can end up looking too heavy or mask-like, and sometimes it even draws more attention to imperfections. Many of my favourite formulas contain diamond powder, which is fantastic for providing a soft-focus effect to minimise the appearance of imperfections.

Bronzed & Beautiful

Another great product to help even out your skin tone is bronzer. If you feel like your complexion looks dull or if your face is a different colour to the rest of your body, correct it with a bronzer. A great way to add warmth to your complexion and ensure it looks nice and even, apply the bronzer to all the places where the sun would naturally hit, such as the cheeks, forehead and even onto the neck and chest.
