How To Banish the Winter Blues

How To Banish the Winter Blues

SL Beauty Contributor Georgia Day believes there are plenty of beauty products out there powerful enough to lift your mood and help you through these short, cold January days. Here are some of her favourites…

Make Time To Play

Although my social calendar looks quieter for now, I’m still having fun with make-up. In fact, this time of year is one of the best times to experiment with new products and discover some new looks – if you don’t like it, just wash it off. I’ve finally found time to nail the perfect feline flick thanks to lots of practice in front of the bathroom mirror (the MyBe x My Beauty Brand Black Liquid Liner is the best tool for the job) and discovered that actually, I do suit the 90s brown lipstick trend after all. Anastasia Beverley Hills Satin Lipstick in Rose Brown will be my new go-to come spring.

Go After A Glow

All I can think about is banishing my pale, winter complexion, which means upping my use of radiance-inducing skincare. I’ve been using several products that promise to brighten and even out my skin tone with powerful ingredients like vitamin C. First up is Ren’s newest serum, the Glow and Protect Serum, which contains brightening antioxidants like kakadu plum and has definitely made a difference. Before Christmas I got through Sisley’s new Radiance Anti-Dark Spot Serum too. It’s pricier, but as textures go it’s divine and has helped reduce some of my more stubborn pigmentation. Finally, Votary’s new Natural Glow Day Cream, which is formulated with fermented plant extracts, bakuchiol and hyaluronic acid, does a stellar job of strengthening the skin’s delicate barrier and improving the look of dull complexions.

Let There Be Light

A beautiful candle is the fastest and prettiest way I know to banish the January blues. Right now, I’m loving the Loewe candles, which come in all shapes, sizes and scents. Not only are they well crafted, but the fragrances are also unlike anything I’ve experienced in a long time. Particular favourites include the Tomato Leaves Candle and the unbelievably elegant Luscious Pea Wax Candleholder. If it wasn’t January and I wasn’t trying to budget a bit more, the Eym Naturals collaboration with Laguna B (I like Soul, which comes in reusable cobalt Murano glassware) and Cire Trudon’s stunning Marie-Antoinette’s Bust Candle would both be on my mantelpiece, too.

Fix Your Feet

After months of wearing winter boots, it’s time to give my feet some TLC. They probably won’t see the light of day for a few more months yet, but there’s something so satisfying about slipper-soft feet and pretty nails in the middle of winter. When it comes to resurfacing scaly heels there’s only one contender: Patchology’s Pedi Cure. I’ve tried every other option out there and nothing comes close. You have to wait three to seven days after wearing these acid-soaked booties before the rough skin starts to shed, but when it does, the results are incredible. To complement my new feet I want a joyful, spring-like shade. Nails Inc’s Florals for Spring quad fits the bill (it’s out on 8th February).

Lean Into Crystals

After a stressful end to last year, I’m determined to feel more positive and less strung out in 2022. I recently had a consultation with Emma Lucy, a healer and crystal reader who gave me some of her new Worry Rocks to use during our session. As well as following her intuitive advice about how to be kinder to myself and repeating the affirmations she gave me, I’ve been using her crystals religiously every night before bed. I like to think of them as conduits that help me block out the noise of the day and feel infinitely calmer. Whether or not you buy into the crystal hype, I can honestly say it’s helped me feel a lot more zen.
