A Make-Up Artist Shares Their Favourite M·A·C Lipsticks

When it comes to lipstick, M·A·C is hard to beat. With 250 shades and 12 textures on offer, the range is vast and the formulas – be it silky glosses, matte finishes or high-impact liquids – are second-to-none. In honour of National Lipstick Day, we asked M·A·C Global Senior Artist, Dominic Skinner, to share his favourites from the brand…

CREATED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH M·A·C

Ruby Woo, £17.50

Why He Loves It: “Everyone knows and loves Ruby Woo. It’s the most iconic red of all time and it was the first M·A·C product I bought. At the time, I was on the hunt for the reddest red out there and this was it. Nothing has the same depth or vividness. It has a retro, matte texture that makes it devoid of any shine, but it doesn’t dry your lips out and stays put all day, too. Suitable for so many occasions, it looks great on a red carpet, on a bride, or even to elevate a simple jeans and t-shirt type of day. A must-have in everyone’s lipstick collection.”

Twig, £17.50

Why He Loves It: “This is one of M·A·C ‘s ‘OG’ lipsticks. An early 90s pinkie-brown that’s not been out of the spotlight since the day it launched – it’s universally flattering, something that’s often very difficult to find. The satin texture delivers high-pigmented colour and just the right amount of shine – plus, it makes your lips look flawless with zero fuss.”

Mull It Over, £19.50

Why He Loves It: “Mull It Over takes the 90s nude lip trend and updates it with a modern, matte twist. It has the ‘Powder Kiss’ texture which is sheer, blurred out and feathery to give the lips a plumper, fuller finish, while hydrating them at the same time, too. Described as a ‘dirty peach’, its warm undertones work well with most complexions. I often say it’s a ‘bottom of the bag’ colour – by which I mean, you can carry it around and apply it everywhere you go, knowing full well it will always look chic.”

See Sheer, £17.50

Why He Loves It: “See Sheer is my little lipstick secret. It’s a shade not everyone knows about, but everyone should. The lustrous texture gives your lips the appearance of a glazed donut – think shine without the stickiness. Plus, the colour is such a stand-out. The pink grapefruit hue adds just the right amount of warmth to  your lips, making them look healthy and plump. Most people never look back once they’ve tried it.”

Marrakesh, £17.50

Why He Loves It: “Casablanca sunsets and Moroccan spices are captured in this rich, reddish orange. Deep and intense, but also easy to wear, if you’re someone who has always wanted to wear red, but never quite had the confidence, then this is the shade to try. Equally, if you are a fan of bold shades, but want something different, it’s ideal.”

Hey Good Looking! Love Me Liquid, £19.50

Why He Loves It: “Bold and beautiful, this bright pink isn’t for the faint-hearted, but that’s precisely why I like it. The first sweep delivers a dose of high-impact colour to take you from cool (with a hint of mascara) to chic (teamed with a smoked-out eye) in seconds. Part of the ‘Love Me’ texture line-up, it’s brimming with hydration – including argan oil – so lips look plump and full, but without any bleeding or feathering. A true winner.”

Finally... Dom's Application Tip:

“There are so many ways to wear and apply lipstick other than just sweeping it across straight from the bullet. Try rubbing the bullet onto a fingertip, then rubbing the colour gently over your lip. This will give you the look of a lip stain, with kissed out edges – it’s cool and on-trend. You can also ‘blush’ your lips by pressing the lipstick on the lip repeatedly. Use the edge of the lipstick bullet to line up with the edge of your lip – this will maintain structure of your lip shape, but the pressing technique will slowly build the colour up. Add more in the middle to create a soft-focus, blush effect.”
