Oberpollinger 
This emporium of old and new has been around since 1905 and has everything you would ever need or want. It’s one of the main department stores in Munich and easily recognisable from its distinctive traditional German architecture.

Both of us could spend hours in a book or magazine store and Soda has one of the most extensive edits around. Its huge range of magazines is one of the best in the city.

RESTAURANTS

Kaisergarten
If you’re after some excellent traditional Bavarian food, head to Kaisergarten on Kaiserstraße. It serves generous portions of duck and dumplings, roast pork and authentic schnitzel, and also has a nice beer garden to enjoy in the summer. We love the relaxed ambience here and we make sure we visit whenever when we’re in Munich.

Dallmayr
Dallmayr is the delicatessen of our dreams. It has the finest cheese, meats and wine – as well as some pretty unique Bavarian food that make great souvenirs.

Tantris
Tantris has become our go-to gastronomic pilgrimage whenever we’re in Munich. The two-Michelin-starred restaurant has a legendary 1970s style, which is almost unchanged since its opening, but it serves a modern selection of French, Austrian and Swiss cuisine. There’s always something new and delicious on the menu.

Ayinger Am Platzl
This traditional German restaurant has Munich’s best käsespätzle– Germany’s answer to macaroni cheese. We both love the relaxed atmosphere and super traditional menu. Try the Rote Beetepüree (suckling pig coated in bread) for a real treat.

Vollaths
Just outside the city centre, Vollaths is a lovely local restaurant that does a great breakfast and some amazing cakes. It has delicious German bread with all sorts of toppings, as well as a healthy lunch menu and delicious spritzes.

Preysinggarte
Preysinggarten is one of our favourite brunch spots in the city for its relaxed dining, great menu and easy-going atmosphere. We love to go for a walk around its neighbourhood, which is home to some charming buildings in the French quarter of the city.

Ory Bar
The Mandarin Oriental hotel is a great place to go for drinks. Inside, you’ll find Ory Bar which has some really cool avant-garde cocktails. The elegant atmosphere and entertaining bartenders mean we always have a great night.

Zephyr
When you’re in need of a seriously good cocktail, head to Zephyr on Baaderstraße. It uses locally sourced ingredients and spirits to concoct drinks that look and taste stunning. We’re looking forward to going back to try its new hand-crafted slushies.

Kiosk Reichenbachbrücke 
The most ‘Munich’ thing to do in summer is grab a beer at Kiosk Reichenbachbrücke and cross the bridge to the other side, where you can sit by the river to watch the sunset. When we’re in town in the warmer months, you’ll find us dipping our toes in the crystal-clear waters while sipping on something cooling.

HOTELS

Beyond By Geisel
We love staying at Beyond by Geisel. It’s a luxurious hotel in a great location right on Marienplatz. It’s fairly small with only 19 rooms and feels cosy and intimate, so you can easily mingle with some of the interesting guests. Book one of the rooms on the top floor for stunning views of the city.

Flushing Meadows 
A little further from the city centre, Flushing Meadows combines modern decor with gorgeous views – depending on the weather, you might even spot the Alps in the distance. This hotel really gives you the best of both worlds, whether you want to camp outdoors on the pop-up site during summer, or stay in one of the luxe loft bedrooms within the hotel.

Louis Hotel
Head here for the best views of the famous Viktualienmarkt. The Louis Hotel brings a touch of Japan to Munich with its minimalist design and chic interiors. For us, staying here is such a special experience and, after a busy day sightseeing, there’s nothing better than relaxing with a cocktail on the beautiful rooftop bar.

PLACES TO VISIT

Haus Der Kunst 
Haus der Kunst is one of the most famous museums in Munich with a rich collection of history and artefacts from around the world. It’s a true global centre for modern art where you can easily spend a whole day looking at the exhibitions. We often spend an afternoon perusing the galleries before stopping for a drink at the Goldene Bar on the ground floor.

Eisbach River
Eisbach River is a must-see in Munich. Take a romantic walk along the riverbank and watch the city surfers ride the waves. Just past the bridge near the Haus der Kunst, the river forms a standing wave about 1m high, making it a popular surfing spot – any fellow Australians will appreciate this! 
 
Blue Spa 
If you’re in need of some self-care, we would highly recommend Blue Spa within Bayerischer Hof Hotel. Take some time to pamper yourself and head for the open-air swimming pool on the top floor. We love a massage from one of the spa’s therapists before having a drink in the cosy lounge.

Nymphenburg Palace & Park 
One of the most famous landmarks in Munich, Nymphenburg Palace is only 20 minutes from the main city centre by tram. First timers should go to Nymphenburg for its expansive gardens and enchanting pavilions.
