Thought you’d never be caught dead in neon? Think again, as it’s about to be a big trend.

No longer the reserve of 90s ravers and construction workers, neon is bright and is back in a big way in 2019. Consider it an extension of the 80s renaissance –  while metallics and mini skirts reigned supreme last year, now the fashion world is moving on to 90s neon, placing luminous ready-to-wear, accessories and even beauty at the top of the agenda.

It all began with the runway. SS19’s selection proved neon works across the board, from streetwear (cult-turned-mainstream It brand Off-White showcased nearly 20 high-vis looks) to surprisingly, more sophisticated corners of the industry too. Show-stopping occasion wear was a key theme, with Escada, Armani, Prada and Versace all parading acidic yellows and high-octane Barbie pink slip dresses, lace-panelled midis and romantic evening pieces. Knitwear, jewellery and accessories also succumbed to the trend; JW Anderson, Calvin Klein and Oscar De La Renta gave these closet classics a neon-themed revamp. 

It didn’t take long for look to trickle down – fashion types took to the streets in everything from fluro tees to shock colour pop accessories, proving the trend’s surprising wearability. Our tips for nailing the look à la your favourite influencers? Neon pink is less in your face than yellow and green hues, so stick to bold bubblegum shades like Jeanette Madsen to dip your toe into the look. If you want a chic way to do the trend, pair with a fuss-free, neutral base, such as black.

If you’re tempted but aren’t sure you are ready to embrace the whole neon vibe, the derivative beauty trend may suit you better. Switch up your make up routine with a striking swish of neon-hued eyeliner or eye shadow – it may sound scary, but it can add a fresh, modern edge to your everyday look. Still not convinced? Save it for summer – a pop of pink against bronzed skin is an unexpectedly wearable holiday look. Alternatively, give neon nails a go; the perfect, easily reversible way to trial the trend.
