My Wellness Toolkit: Kim Smith

Here, we ask industry experts to share the supplements and wellness essentials they can’t be without. From the vitamins they rely on for optimal immunity, to the products that help them switch off after a busy day, we go behind-the-scenes to discover what keeps these women in peak health.

You should always check where a supplement comes from. The source of a supplement is important and can be an indicator of quality. For example, spirulina and sea algae from China don’t tend to be the best. When it comes to greens, Athletic Greens’ blend is made in New Zealand with strict microbiological testing – it’s a great smoothie booster. You should always check if a supplement is made without added sugar or sweeteners, too. 

Personally, I’m obsessed with magnesium. Magnesium flake baths are great for aches, pains and insomnia, but I’ve recently felt the need to take an oral magnesium supplement in addition, as it’s a mineral many of us are deficient in, particularly if you lead a stressful and busy lifestyle. Doctor Dean’s ReMag The Magnesium Miracle is a great liquid formula. The other week, I was exhausted after several nights of broken sleep and my left eye was twitching for days. I took ReMag and the twitching virtually disappeared that day. It doesn’t taste great, but the flavour is easily disguised if you mix it with a small amount of fruit juice or water. 

Multivitamins aren’t worth the hype. ’It's better to get as many nutrients from your food and only take supplements if you are struggling to get adequate doses of a particular nutrient.

Mushrooms are great for immunity. They are some of the most nutrient dense foods, and contain powerful compounds such as beta-glucans, triterpenes, metabolites, L-ergothioneine, vitamin D, prebiotics, digestive enzymes, chelated minerals, amino acids, proteins, and B vitamins. They support a healthy immune system – Cymbiotika’s Organic Longevity Mushrooms are a good option. 

Omega oils are a health all-rounder. When I do take them, I only take Bare Biology – I really trust them as a brand. I took their Mums & Bumps version (for pregnancy and breastfeeding) every single day for around three years and am now working my way through the rest of the range.

Biotin is something I swear by. It’s a great nutrient if you’re interested in hair health. I used it on my eyebrows once over a period of 12 weeks and it made a significant difference to their thickness. In terms of hair supplements, Hair Vitalics is great – it’s a one-a-day formula that’s packed with biotin, selenium and zinc. Crucially, it’s also sugar-free.

While I can’t be without my daily caffeine fix, sometimes we all need an extra boost. I really rate Heights’ supplements, which help supercharge energy levels and protect against cognitive decline. 

Looking after your gut health is so important. A gastroenterologist once told me to always alternate probiotics to get a good mixture of cultures, so I take both Alflorex and BioKult. Cymbiotika’s Bio-Charged Activated Charcoal is also great to quickly reduce bloating and discomfort.

Everyone should have a nightly ritual. Every evening before bed, I apply Kloris’ CBD Balm to the soles of my feet and take a few of our 1000mg oral drops. This really helps me to unwind after a busy day. When I’m feeling low or particularly stressed, I’ll take three to five drops of either our 500mg or 1000mg drops throughout the day. 

Like so many, I’m also a skincare junkie. I use the Kloris Superboost Face Oil with everything – I mix it with moisturiser and foundation or tinted moisturiser when my skin is drier in the winter. I recently discovered Marie Reynolds’ Restore Mask, which I love. It very much follows our ethos of phytonutrients feeding the skin – it’s a genius product. SPF is also a daily essential – I use SkinCeuticals Sheer Mineral SPF, which doesn’t irritate my skin or clog pores.

Using a shower filter can reduce toxin exposure. We inhale and absorb so many toxins when showering and bathing, all of which can have a negative impact on our overall health and immunity. Water has to be sterilised for human consumption but there is always residual chlorine, heavy metals and pesticides – heat that water to 35°C or more for the average shower and inhalation and dermal absorption rate is at its peak. I’ve been using a KLEAN shower filter for years and even run baths with it, too. They also offer a handy subscription service for filters.

I don’t see exercise as a chore when it’s outdoors – it clears my head and inspires me.

It’s never been easier to make the switch to eco cleaning products. For clothes, SMOL is great. They offer a plastic-free subscription box for washing capsules. There are still so many bigger brands that use throwaway plastic packaging and animal fats hidden in their formulas, which seems both unnecessary and out-dated in this day and age. Plus, it’s crazy to think cleaning sprays are at least 90% water and we buy a new bottle every time we run out. For that reason, I love SPRUCE, a new start-up that offers chic-looking refills made without nasty chemicals. EcoVibe is another personal favourite.

You’ll always find some NUUT sachets in my cupboard. These are plant-based protein sachets that taste great mixed with oat milk. My favourite is the Daily Balance blend, which tastes like chocolate, but is packed with added superfoods like pumpkin, peas, prebiotics and kale. 

There’s nothing better than exercising outdoors. I’m not a regular gym-goer, and instead prefer to do all my exercise outside in the fresh air. The air, especially when it’s cold, amplifies the benefits of my physical activity, whether it’s walking, hiking or running. I read recently that after a while of experiencing cold exposure through exercise you start to crave the exhilarating feeling. I don’t see exercise as a chore when it’s outdoors – it clears my head and inspires me. 

I’ve practiced transcendental meditation for years. I never use an app to meditate – that is the opposite of Zen for me. I have worked closely with the David Lynch Foundation for many years since learning TM – it really is all about practice. 

Social media is strictly limited to work only. Two years ago, I stopped using social platforms for anything personal, which means all my social interactions and connections are now more authentic, even if it’s just a phone call with a friend instead of a text. A FaceTime call is so much more nourishing than an Instagram relationship. I value my time and don’t want to get stuck in a rabbit hole of mindless scrolling.
