Travel Tips From The Adventures Of Us

Making a living from travelling the world is up there when it comes to dream jobs, and blogger couple The Adventures of Us are giving us some serious career envy.

Best friends and partners in life and love, Sarah-Louise Marks and Christopher Phelps created their site as a way to fuse their passions for photography and travel – and now run it as a successful business venture alongside their busy London day jobs. We caught up with the globe-trotting pair to talk all things holidays and travel…

What are your top travels picks for 2018?

We’ve just got back from Turks and Caicos, which truly is paradise; next we’re planning on exploring Japan and the Palawan Islands in the Philippines.

Best adventure you’ve ever been on?

That’s a tough one, but our biggest adventure was probably road tripping across the USA. We visited the Johnny Cash museum in Nashville, listened to live Jazz in New Orleans, ate the best barbeque food in Memphis, explored the vintage shops in Austin, watched the sunrise in Monument Valley, relaxed in luxury at Amangiri Utah, had one wild night in Vegas, watched the sun set in Joshua Tree, fell in love with LA all over again and got lost in Yosemite.

Why did you decide to launch The Adventures Of Us?

We came up with the idea for The Adventures of Us during a trip to one of our favourite places, Positano on Italy’s Amalfi Coast. It was such a romantic trip in a magical location, we realised that travelling together was something we wanted to do for the rest of our lives and created a platform to document the memories we cherish from our adventures around the globe.

Why do you think your blog stands out so much?

The fact we travel as a couple makes us quite unique; as there are two perspectives working cohesively. Everything we do and everywhere we go is based on our personal taste – we’re passionate about travelling, incredible food, finding hidden gems, amazing scenery and inspiring interiors. We try to make sure it shows through in our work, inspires fellow travellers and allows our audience can connect with us on a personal level.

Why are adventures so important to you?

Travelling is an essential part of self-care and growth. We live busy lives in bustling London, so allowing windows of time to escape and experience new cultures and a change of scenery revitalises the soul and keeps us inspired.

How do you balance working on your blog and a day job?

It’s not easy. A lot of hard work and very long hours go into both, but by staying focused and positive it becomes fairly natural to balance – and it’s definitely worth it.

Top things to look for when booking a trip?

We always consider the culture, food, beautiful views, architecture and, ideally, good weather.

Holidays are for relaxing and switching off from whatever consumes your working life. Travelling is about opening yourself up to new experiences and absorbing what you find.

What makes a hotel stand out to you?

We always notice when hosts look after us and make us feel at home, it can really shape your experience. Attention to detail is also key, from beautiful architectural and interior details, to the ambience and even staff remembering your name, it makes all the difference.

Any tips for creating Insta-worthy holiday photos?

Keep a keen eye for the details and focus on great lighting.

What’s the difference between traveling and going on holiday?

Holidays are for relaxing and switching off from whatever consumes your working life. Travelling is about opening yourself up to new experiences and absorbing what you find. The funny thing is, we find both can work in perfect harmony.

We live busy lives in bustling London, so allowing windows of time to escape and experience new cultures and a change of scenery revitalises the soul and keeps us inspired.

What’s on your travel playlist?

Christopher is a music supervisor and composer in London, so music plays an enormous role when we travel. Our playlists are curated for each destination, but usually always contains something that is emotive and sounds good at 35,000ft.

What are your go-to travel fashion brands?

We love luggage from both Globetrotter and Tumi. Faithfull the Brand and Realisation Par are perfect for the beach, and we love our Nick Fouquet hats.

Where is the best hotel you have ever stayed?

That’s a tough one for us to agree on, but probably Amanyara in Turks and Caicos, or Amangiri in Utah.

We realised that travelling together was something we wanted to do for the rest of our lives and created a platform to document the memories we cherish from our adventures around the globe.

We never travel without… A 35mm pocket camera and a portable speaker.

A holiday isn't a holiday without... Each other.

We never want to go back to... Everywhere deserves a fresh perspective, but Miami International Airport kind of sucks.

We could always go back to... Tulum, Mexico.

Our holiday playlist always features… The appropriate vibe for our location.

The secret to a good holiday picture is... A beautiful sunrise.

The best destination for food is... Positano, Italy. Hands down.

The best destination for culture is... Sri Lanka. It’s incredible!

The best destination for relaxation is... The Maldives or the Caribbean.

The best destination for fun is… The United States of America, every state has something different to offer.
