Positioned high above striking terracotta cliffs, the sprawling resort feels less like a hotel and more like a beautifully designed village, with whitewashed villas, modern apartments, winding gardens, eight pools and 15 restaurants spread across 179 acres. Cots, bottle warmers and baby baths are waiting at check-in, and my son was completely obsessed with Porto Pirata – the enormous pirate-themed playground filled with treasure hunts, activities and endless space to run around. He also loved the kids’ club, while older children can move between tennis, padel, watersports and mini golf throughout the day. Even the journey to the beach feels memorable thanks to the dramatic cliffside lift ride down to the sand. We ended up at Maré most afternoons for long, lazy beach lunches, while Portofino became our go-to for relaxed toddler-friendly dinners. For something quieter, [Viceroy Ombria Algarve](https://www.viceroyhotelsandresorts.com/ombria-algarve/offers/stay-4-nights-save-25-and-enjoy-long-weekend) is a special find. Hidden in the hills just 20 minutes from Faro airport, the recently opened hotel has been designed to feel like a traditional Portuguese village, complete with a bakery, café and praça surrounded by olive groves. It’s incredibly peaceful but still genuinely family-friendly – something surprisingly hard to get right. We stayed in a two-bedroom residence with a kitchen, which made travelling with a toddler infinitely easier, and loved the family-friendly infinity pool and the brilliant V Team Kids’ Club, which offers everything from clay workshops to bracelet making, plus a play kitchen and nap room for younger children. Despite the calm, grown-up atmosphere, our son never felt like an afterthought here. There’s also a beautiful spa, four pools and an award-winning golf course, so it still feels like a proper holiday for adults too. For a special long-haul family trip, [Chatham Bars Inn](https://www.chathambarsinn.com/) in Cape Cod is hard to beat. I actually stayed there myself as a child when my family lived in the US, so returning with my son when he was eight months old felt full circle. Set right on the Cape Cod coastline, it delivers that classic New England summer fantasy perfectly – hydrangeas, weathered shingles, ocean views and long walks along the hotel’s private beach. One of my favourite things was how easy everything felt – we’d stroll straight into the little village of Chatham for coffee, shopping and ice cream before heading back for nap walks by the water. For older children, the Kids Crew programme looked brilliant, with sailing lessons, scavenger hunts, arts and crafts, outdoor games and movie nights, while the private beach cabanas made long beach days with a baby feel exceptionally easy thanks to food and drink service straight to your sunbed. Looking ahead, there are a few family hotels firmly on my radar. For us, it strikes the perfect balance. We love having our own space in a villa, while still being able to dip in and out of the club for watersports, long lunches and relaxed afternoons by the sea. The childcare is excellent too, from the crèche to the brilliantly organised TARKA kids’ clubs and teen activities. Everything is split by age group, so it all feels very well thought through, and the children always come away having learnt something new, whether that’s sailing, windsurfing, kayaking or paddleboarding, as well as having made loads of friends and had the kind of holiday they talk about for months afterwards. We had lots of coastal stops en route, and there can be quite a cool sea breeze, even in summer, so being set back in the valley was more sheltered. The setting is beautiful – that quintessential California landscape. Nestled between the Santa Lucia Mountains and the leafy vineyards of Carmel, it is ideally located to explore quaint Carmel-by-the-Sea, Monterey Bay, Pacific Grove and Pebble Beach. And there’s more than enough to do within its 500-acre grounds, such as hiking trails and beekeeping, tennis and golf, and the River Ranch Camp for kids. I fondly remember the most magical evening in the vegetable garden, where we ate family style with other guests and the kids all ran among the crops making new friends. Less than an hour out of London is [ Beaverbrook](https://beaverbrook.co.uk/), a self-proclaimed ‘470-acre playground’ for families who like to combine keeping active with some pampering downtime. Kids’ activities run from archery and falconry to cycling and croquet. If it’s a rainy day, you can snuggle up in the luxury cinema, take shelter in the treehouse or check out the video games, but on sunny days you’d struggle to fit in everything on offer. Sharky & George are on hand to keep kids fully entertained with their Adventure Club, while The Bear Grylls Survival Academy offers a unique opportunity to learn key survival skills in half- or full-day packages. Taught by a range of hand-picked, highly trained and knowledgeable instructors, it recreates some of the unique scenarios seen on Bear’s TV programmes – how fun! And all in the setting of the beautiful Beaverbrook estate. Pootling along the cove in the little boat we hired for the day, I remember looking back at [Eagles Palace](https://www.eaglesresort.gr/) in Halkidiki, Greece, from the clear blue sea and thinking this must be the best family holiday we’ve had so far. Since we visited in 2017, the hotel has expanded to include Eagles Villas, and the hotel facilities and rooms have been upgraded. From what I’ve heard, the charm and magic of the hotel have been retained – we loved the retro 1970s vibe of the main lobby (think tasselled Greek cushions and exposed stone walls). The extensive activities for kids have been further expanded to include a choice of watersports, boat or e-bike rentals, spa treatments and tennis and padel courts. There’s also a daily wellness, entertainment and experiences programme that includes picnics on offshore islets inhabited only by seabirds and goats. Nearby is an authentic fishing village called Ouranoupoli, perfect for dinner when you want a break from the hotel restaurants. We usually share a lodge with one of my siblings and their family, which makes it feel relaxed and sociable. The lodges are self-catered, although you can have anything delivered. They’re set around a lovely little village-style hub with a casual bar, concierge service, and food available throughout the day. Each lodge comes with bikes, so you can cycle over to the main hotel and make the most of all the facilities there – from coffee and artisan cakes to fine dining at the likes of Andrew Fairlie, an amazing kids’ club, and loads of outdoor activities. And obviously, it’s all surrounded by the most beautiful heathland, which makes the whole place feel incredibly special. [Six Senses Zighy Bay](https://www.sixsenses.com/en/hotels-resorts/middle-east-africa/oman/zighy-bay/) in Oman will always be a special place for me. I’ve been with friends, as a newlywed, and later with a young family – and I’ve loved it every time. For that true off-grid feeling, you arrive by driving down over the mountains into a secluded cove, which immediately makes it feel like an escape from everything. It’s an eco-resort, so everything blends beautifully into the landscape and feels completely unobtrusive – quiet luxury at its best. I’m not sure I’ve ever stayed anywhere so relaxing while also feeling so well looked after. The kids’ club is brilliant, with things like beach bowling, sand art and even goat feeding – they're very much part of the local community. There’s also a teens’ club, which makes it work just as well for older children. From the rustic villas and private pools to dhow boat trips, and dinners up in the mountains try [Sense On The Edge](https://www.sixsenses.com/en/hotels-resorts/middle-east-africa/oman/zighy-bay/dining/sense-on-the-edge/), it all feels otherworldly.
