## THE VISION

**We bought our home knowing it had huge potential**. That said, it needed rethinking to work for modern family life. From the outset, we knew we wanted to extend and create a beautiful open plan space and more bedrooms. Our vision wasn’t about creating a show home or adding value for resale; it was about creating a home that would support our family for years to come.

**My style is best described as timeless, layered and relaxed.** I love natural materials, warm wood tones, vintage-inspired pieces and spaces that feel collected rather than overly styled. Throughout the renovation, I became more confident in embracing character and imperfection rather than chasing trends. The end result feels much more personal because of that.

**Flow was everything.** We wanted a layout that worked for everyday family life, whether that was cooking, entertaining, helping with homework or simply spending time together. Creating a kitchen that connected to the rest of the home was a major priority, as was maximising natural light and ensuring every space served a purpose.

**We tried to be intentional with our spending.** We prioritised the elements we’d interact with every day. The kitchen, joinery, lighting and quality materials were areas where we were willing to invest because they have such a significant impact on both functionality and longevity. In other areas, we mixed high and low to stay within budget.

## THE RENOVATION PROCESS

**My husband project managed the build and I looked after the interior design.** The biggest challenge was balancing the renovation alongside family life. Making hundreds of decisions while raising young children and managing day-to-day responsibilities can be incredibly demanding. Renovating isn’t just a financial investment, it’s an emotional one too.

**Recommendations were invaluable.** We found our architect through a friend and our builder on [Check a Trade](https://www.checkatrade.com/). We spent time speaking to previous clients, viewing completed projects and making sure our communication styles aligned. My best piece of advice is to choose people you trust because you’ll be working closely together for a long time.

**Like most renovations, there were unexpected challenges once work began.** For example, we had to dig the foundations much deeper than originally planned due to large trees in our garden. Delays can feel frustrating but flexibility is essential. We focused on finding solutions rather than dwelling on setbacks.

**Decision fatigue is real.** Every finish, fitting and layout decision – from socket placements, door swings, storage dimensions and lighting circuits – was carefully considered. Having a clear vision from the start helped make those decisions easier, especially towards the end when even choosing a paint colour can feel overwhelming.

**If I was to do anything differently, I’d create a detailed lighting plan much earlier on.** Lighting has such a huge impact on how a home feels, yet it’s often left until later when many of the other decisions have been made. I would also start planning the interior layout as soon as I had the architect’s drawings. Understanding where furniture, lighting, artwork and joinery will sit early on informs everything else.

## DESIGN DECISIONS & INSPIRATION

**Pinterest was an incredible tool during the planning stages.** It helped me identify recurring themes and understand what I was drawn to – warm tones, natural wood, marble, brass accents and layered, timeless interiors. Instagram has also been a huge source of inspiration. I’ve always loved [Studio McGee](https://www.studio-mcgee.com/) – it creates homes that feel both elevated and liveable.

**I was careful not to follow trends too closely.** Instead, I focused on creating a home that felt authentic to us. By sharing our own renovation journey, I’ve become an interiors content creator myself, so I hope our home can now inspire others in the same way.

**I find inspiration everywhere** – from boutique hotels and historic homes to magazines and travel. I love mixing investment pieces with vintage finds and sourcing items that add warmth, texture and personality. One of my favourite brands is [CharlesTed](https://www.charlestedhome.co.uk/). We found our hallway console table there. For investment furniture, [OKA](https://click.linksynergy.com/deeplink?id=etT1jgERWYw&mid=46541&murl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.oka.com%2F) is somewhere I go back to time and again. I then balance those larger purchases with accessories and finishing touches from [Zara Home](https://www.awin1.com/cread.php?awinmid=32887&awinaffid=69421&ued=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.zarahome.com%2Fgb), [H&M Home](https://click.linksynergy.com/deeplink?id=etT1jgERWYw&mid=43250&murl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww2.hm.com%2Fen_gb%2Fhome.html) and [Homesense](https://www.homesense.com/home).

**My best practical decisions were around ample storage and carefully planned electrical layouts.** These aren’t the features that get the most attention on social media but they make a huge difference to how a home functions. One feature I love is the hidden charger cupboard in our kitchen. It’s become the home for all the devices, cables and everyday clutter that would otherwise end up spread across worktops. It’s one of those practical details that visitors might not immediately notice but it has made family life so much easier.

## KITCHEN DOS & DON’TS

**Prioritising workflow in the kitchen was one of the smartest decisions we made.** Everything is positioned to make cooking and daily life easier. Hidden appliances make everything feel clutter-free, integrated appliances fit in seamlessly and opting for a ceiling fan over a bulky extractor over the island has been a game-changer.

**One thing I’d change is adding a pull-out spray to the kitchen sink** – it’s one of my regrets. We have a large sink and it would have made cleaning so much easier. Thankfully it is something we can get added in at some point.

M**ost of our choices have worked well.** Unlacquered hardware and taps – which naturally oxidise over time developing a unique, warm patina – mean you can only use warm water and a soft cloth to clean them, so they do require extra maintenance. For me, the extra care is worth it for the look.

**There are some kitchen essentials I couldn’t live without.** A large island, generous storage, a hidden charger cupboard, a double larder unit with spice racks, layered lighting, a breakfast cupboard and integrated appliances have all transformed how we use the space.

## BEDROOMS & LIVING SPACES

**My best tip here is to prioritise lighting.** Layered lighting creates a far more relaxing atmosphere. Storage should also feel integrated and intentional, and the layout should promote a sense of calm rather than trying to maximise every square inch.

**Our living area is in the open plan space.** I wanted it to feel cohesive with the rest of the room, so we opted for neutral colours, bringing in warmer tones through the rug and coffee table. I also got a [Samsung Frame TV](https://www.samsung.com/uk/lifestyle-tvs/the-frame/) concealed with a gorgeous vintage style frame and downloaded art from a talented oil painter to make it look like a special piece.

**Texture has such an impact on a room.** Layering fabrics, natural materials and softer finishes can completely transform how a bedroom feels.

**The open plan kitchen, living and dining space was the most expensive area.** It was also the most complex space because it required careful co-ordination between cabinetry, appliances, lighting, plumbing and structural elements. We also decide to get sliders all the way across the back of the house which was definitely an investment.

**One decision that surprises people was not installing built-in storage beneath our staircase.** I felt it would have made the hallway feel more functional than welcoming. Instead, I chose a statement console table from CharlesTed, which has become one of my favourite pieces in the house. For me, not every available space has to be maximised. Sometimes, it’s worth sacrificing a little practicality to create a space that bring you joy every time you walk through the door.

## BATHROOMS

**The details are what take a bathroom from functional to luxurious.** Thoughtful lighting, larger tiles on the walls, limestone herringbone tiles on the floor, as well as plenty of storage and a floor to ceiling tongue-and-groove backdrop all add depth and character.

**Think carefully before choosing something that’s trending.** Bathrooms are expensive to renovate, so timeless choices offer better longevity. I also absolutely love a tiled shower tray; I think it looks so luxurious.

**The powder room felt like an opportunity to be a little more playful.** Because it’s a smaller space, we could take greater risks without overwhelming the rest of the home. I went bold by using the colour ‘[Arras](https://www.littlegreene.com/arras)’ by Little Greene Paint Company. I also used chequerboard marble tiles on the floor to add more character.

**My non-negotiables are good tiles, lighting and storage.** Storage is essential because even the most beautiful bathroom can quickly feel cluttered. Tiles are one of the biggest visual investments, so it’s important to choose something you’ll love years from now. Finally, lighting is crucial. Bathrooms need practical task lighting for everyday use but layered lighting also helps create a softer, more relaxing atmosphere.

## FINAL REFLECTIONS

**One of the things I’ve learned is that a home is never truly finished.** But I actually think that’s part of its beauty. The best homes evolve over time. We’re yet to finish the children’s rooms, our front living room and family bathroom. But I’ve become much less focused on having everything completed – my advice would be not to rush decisions. Take your time, live in the space and allow your home to develop naturally – it will feel far more personal and authentic as a result.

**The renovation has taught me that I value comfort, connection and timeless design.** The spaces I love most are the ones where family life naturally unfolds. Also, don’t renovate for the next owner – renovate for the life you’re living now. Create spaces that support your family, reflect your personality and bring you joy every day.
