I love to buy paintings and pieces abroad (luggage allowance depending!) and have a growing collection of pottery from Grottaglie in Puglia. I buy a LOT on online auctions, with varying degrees of success. Often the frame is better than the picture but it's still a win when you find a bargain. I've found some great pieces on Instagram too, following antiques dealers or specialist sellers. #### 1. Relic Interiors I've followed Ambrice for a while and have bought a few pieces from her. Her eye for antiques is unparalleled in my opinion, and her prices are fair. If you want to add an 'old country house' edge to a room, she's got the paintings to do the job. Bohome Interiors Wall hangings and tapestries (or even small carpets pinned up) make a good replacement for paintings as they can be softer in a bedroom, and are often cheaper. Dorian Caffot de Fawes I discovered this dealer at the Decorative Fair last year (which is an expensive place to buy art, but a great place to get inspiration). My husband and I fell in love with a piece by an artist called Max Papart and combined funds – and negotiated the price down – directly with the dealer to invest in it a few weeks later. The Sale Room This is one of the auction sites I use to bid on bits from around the country. The search function is pretty good, and you can find some absolute steals. Auction houses I follow include Mallams and Roseberys. Just watch out for seller fees and shipping – I've learnt the hard way that those can double the final price. Liberty My love for Liberty goes beyond the beauty halls. On the third and fourth floors you can find some great art, ceramics and interiors with a good edit online too. Some of the framed prints look much more expensive that the price tag, and they're not ones you'll see in lots of other places – for example, the iconic archival Liberty pattern posters. The pieces I treasure most aren't necessarily the most valuable – they're the ones that tell a story. The key is to layer these things over time rather than buying everything at once – that's what gives a home character and makes it feel uniquely yours.
