# Why Everyone Wants To Go Off-Grid This Summer

From phone-free cabins and remote bothies to campervan adventures in the wild, a growing number of travellers are swapping screen time for downtime. As digital fatigue reaches an all-time high, 'unplugged travel' is becoming one of the biggest shifts in the wellness space. Here's what's driving the trend – and why switching off has never been so appealing.

## THE TREND

For years, travel has been about doing more. More destinations, more experiences, more recommendations, more content. But now, a growing number of people are seeking the exact opposite. Unplugged travel is all about holidays designed to help you disconnect from technology and reconnect with the world around you. Whether that's a phone-free cabin in the country, a remote Scottish bothy or a campervan parked up beneath a star-filled sky, travellers are increasingly looking for escapes that put distance between themselves and their screens.

The shift comes as many of us feel permanently switched on. Endless notifications, overflowing inboxes and the pressure to always be available have created a new kind of exhaustion – one that's driving demand for quieter, simpler ways to travel.

## WHY NOW?

"The rise of off-grid travel and digital detoxing is a response to the fatigue people are feeling from digital overload," says Hector Hughes, co-founder of [Unplugged](https://unplugged.rest/). "People are genuinely exhausted by the level of stimulation they're navigating every day and they're looking for spaces that actively remove them from it."

Unlike wellness trends that require complicated routines or expensive treatments, unplugged travel offers something refreshingly simple: the chance to do less.

"It's tricky to escape emails, social media and busyness in our lives but it's much easier to do that in the middle of nature with no technology," Hector explains. "Our stays are up over 50% so far in 2026, showing that demand for intentional time away from phones isn't niche anymore."

Part of the appeal lies in the growing awareness of how constant connectivity affects our wellbeing. "There's real science behind what happens to your nervous system when you step away from constant connectivity and people are starting to feel that for themselves," he says. "Even more so with the rising obsession over wellness tracking – the over-optimisation of our health is pushing people back towards simple wellness and connection, which is exactly what a few days offline provides."

## IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT GOING OFF-GRID

While unplugged travel often conjures images of isolated cabins and wilderness retreats, the appeal is broader . At its core, it's about creating space. "Today, we're constantly connected," says Molly Cooper, co-founder of [Curated Spaces](http://curatedspaces.club). "The cycle of group chats, notifications and endless inboxes never seems to end. With this comes the expectation of always being available, so it's no surprise that more people are actively seeking opportunities to switch off and slow down."

As a result, travellers are increasingly seeking destinations where nature, design and simplicity take centre stage. "At Curated Spaces, we've seen growing demand for off-grid cabins, remote retreats and digital detox escapes as travellers look for a genuine break from the noise of everyday life," Molly explains. "For some this is a remote Scottish bothy with no electricity and a rainwater shower, for others it's a treehouse with interiors by [HÁM Studio](https://studioham.co.uk/) deep in a rewilding project."

The common thread? "Slowing down, reconnecting with the cycles and seasons of nature, and making time, proper time, for ourselves and each other."

## THE NEW LUXURY

In an age where almost everything is available instantly, being unreachable has become something of a luxury. Rather than chasing packed itineraries and back-to-back reservations, many travellers are prioritising experiences that encourage presence: reading a book uninterrupted, cooking over a fire, taking long walks or simply sitting in silence.

"We often think we need to travel far to truly escape," says Molly. "But some of the most restorative breaks can be found just a few hours from home. Usually it's as simple as finding somewhere rooted in nature, popping your phone away and enjoying life's simplest – and greatest – joys."

## EVEN CAMPERVAN HOLIDAYS ARE SEEING THE EFFECT

The trend is also reshaping the way people explore the UK. "As more travellers look to disconnect from busy schedules and reconnect with nature, we're seeing growing demand for off-grid campervan adventures," says Jake Stone, head of UK fleet at [Goboony](https://www.goboony.co.uk/).

For many, the appeal lies in the freedom that campervan travel offers. "A digital detox is quite appealing – escaping constant notifications, slowing down and spending quality time in nature," he says. "Campervans offer a unique alternative to traditional holidays, combining the freedom of the open road with the flexibility to explore remote locations, disconnect from screens and reconnect with the outdoors.” The result is a style of travel that's less about ticking off destinations and more about embracing the journey itself.

## THE TAKEAWAY

While wellness trends come and go, unplugged travel taps into something deeper: a growing desire to escape the noise. Whether it's a secluded cabin, a remote retreat or a campervan adventure through the country, travellers are increasingly looking for experiences that encourage them to be present rather than productive.
