For me, the ultimate is an original Saint Laurent Le Smoking – one of those pieces that genuinely changed the way women dressed: masculine tailoring made incredibly sexy. This oversized version works two ways – as a blazer, or styled as a dress with just sheer black tights. The current Saint Laurent tuxedo is also a useful benchmark for what to look for: a strong shoulder, a beautifully cut lapel and enough length to wear as a dress. You can't really go wrong with a 1970s Tank – I love the decade and it's the watch Yves Saint Laurent famously wore. Learn the model names before you start shopping, since "Cartier Tank" is far too broad a search – save searches for "Tank Louis vintage", then narrow by case material, size and strap. And buy the seller as much as the watch: provenance, servicing and authentication matter more than shaving a little off the price. Vintage examples currently start from around the mid-£2,000s upwards, depending on material and specification. This Demi couture reconstituted vintage fur robe is made from crepe silk satin, embroidered with cherry blossoms, with cuffs and collars from vintage fur coats sourced exclusively from vintage sellers, so no living animals are harmed in the making of it. It's the coat of the season, made in London, and can be worn as an evening jacket or thrown over jeans, the way Kate Moss wore hers. Just bear in mind that it's made to order, so build in an eight-to-ten week delivery time. [Shop Here](https://connerives.com/products/fur-robe) **Vintage Handbag,** *Chanel* If I were buying a Chanel bag now, I'd go vintage and a 2.55 over anything that feels obviously "new Chanel". I love the original Mademoiselle lock, the chain and the slightly anonymous quality of it. I wouldn't want a pristine one, either – give me softened leather, slightly tarnished hardware and something that looks like it's spent 30 years going to very good parties. I think we've become confused about investment dressing and assume it means keeping precious things immaculate – my philosophy is the opposite: if you spend serious money on something, wear it relentlessly. I save searches – "Chanel 2.55 vintage black", "Chanel Reissue aged calfskin" – then filter by decade, leather and hardware. Don't overlook badly photographed pieces either; some of my best finds have been hiding in plain sight. I love it because it's slightly less obvious than a Birkin or Kelly but just as iconic – designed in 1959 and famously carried by Jackie Kennedy, mine is something I'll keep forever. I wear it with denim or a man's cashmere sweater, rather than saving it for "best" – for me, that's the point of buying an expensive bag: it should become part of your life, not sit in a box. consider auction houses when buying Hermès – I look at Christie's and Sotheby's specialist bag departments and keep an eye on major sales beyond London, since Paris, Hong Kong and New York can turn up completely different pieces. For resale, I use Vestiaire Collective and search specifically – "Hermès Constance 18 vintage", as well as the leather name, colour and even the decade. It's beautifully tailored, with strong shoulders and a slightly androgynous feel, yet still flattering and feminine. I paid around £200 for it, when a piece of that quality would easily retail for over £2,000. My tip: always check the wall on the left as soon as you walk into Retro – some of the best pieces are hanging there. I paid around €200, versus an original retail price of well over €1,000. I always recommend building relationships with the owners of the vintage stores you love – once they know your size and style, they'll flag things before they even reach the shop floor. Before buying an expensive shoe, mentally style it with at least five outfits already in your wardrobe – if it only works with one look, skip it. Look for a shape you genuinely love and check resale platforms before buying, both for longevity and market value.
