For me, autumn/winter is always about colour, texture and a few carefully chosen statement pieces – and bags is where I’m planning to start. It can be a bit Marmite – people tend to love it or avoid it completely – but I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how versatile it is. This isn’t just an out-of-the-air prediction either. It plays so well with other colours too. Purple with chocolate brown feels rich and sophisticated, while purple with red has a wonderfully confident energy. If a purple coat or dress feels like too much, I’d start with a bag, shoe, scarf or knit. For mel, leopard works in much the same way as brown, tan or navy, and this season there’s been an explosion of leopard, snakeskin, bambi and tiger prints. The easiest way to wear it is through accessories. A leopard-print belt, shoe or scarf can add interest to denim and knitwear, while a snakeskin bag looks beautiful with tailoring or a camel coat. It’s become one of the most exciting platforms for African creativity, bringing together fashion, culture, craftsmanship and conversations around sustainability. Onalaja is one to watch for sculptural, polished womenswear, while Banke Kuku is known for expressive prints and colour. Desirée Iyamah brings a beautifully confident, feminine feel, and Orange Culture continues to challenge ideas around identity and modern Nigerian fashion. I’m also excited by Hertunba’s bold prints and artisanal details, as well as Bubu Ogisi’s imaginative approach to recycled materials.
