# Expert Tips To Make A Small Apartment Feel Bigger

If you’re wondering how to make a compact London apartment feel generous without stripping away its character, interior designer Claire Sá of De Rosee Sa is the person to ask. She transformed this two-bedroom Notting Hill pied-à-terre with rich colour, clever spatial tricks and layers of pattern and texture, creating a home that feels both considered and genuinely lived in. Here, Claire gives us the tour and shares the design ideas that can make a smaller space feel bigger, bolder and more interesting…

## The Property

This two-bedroom apartment in the heart of Notting Hill belongs to a European creative working in fashion, who wanted a London pied-à-terre that felt like a proper home rather than somewhere to stay occasionally. The footprint itself hasn’t changed – and that was the point. Rather than trying to squeeze more into the apartment, we looked at how the existing space could work harder and, importantly, feel bigger without simply knocking everything through and creating one large open-plan room.

We stripped the apartment back and reconsidered the flow from the moment you walk through the door. We adjusted ceiling heights, improved sight lines and reworked the entrance to create a more generous sense of arrival. Originally, the guest WC opened directly off the entrance hall. Moving it allowed us to create a proper lobby, while a previously enclosed kitchen was opened up with a glazed joinery screen. This allows light and views to pass through to the living room, while keeping the kitchen feeling like a room in its own right. The result is still a two-bedroom apartment, but it feels considerably more spacious, interesting and complete.

## The Brief

The client wanted the apartment to feel like her London home rather than simply a place to stay when she was in the city. She was drawn to Notting Hill for its mix of antiques, eccentricity, independent shops, fashion and contemporary energy, and wanted the interiors to reflect that same sense of contrast.

There is no single design language. We mixed bespoke pieces with antiques, mid-century furniture, vintage lighting and contemporary and postmodern art, creating a home that feels collected rather than overly coordinated. Colour was important too. We used burnt siennas, terracottas and greens through the main living spaces, then moved into softer powdery blues and greens in the bedroom. Despite the amount of colour, the apartment still feels calm, largely because of the way we layered materials.

Instead of adding endless decorative pieces, we used linen wallcoverings, jute, stone, timber, woven fabrics, aged brass and mirror to create depth. There was also a very practical question running through the whole project: how do you make a relatively small apartment feel interesting and layered without making it feel busy? For us, the answer was not to make everything open plan. In fact, that can sometimes have the opposite effect. If you can see the entire home from the front door, you immediately understand its size. We wanted this apartment to reveal itself more slowly, through screens, doorways, mirrors and carefully framed glimpses.

## LET'S TAKE THE TOUR...

## The Living Room

We used rich, layered colour deliberately, rather than relying on the conventional small-space approach of keeping everything pale. Terracotta and burnt sienna tones create warmth and intensity, while linen wallcoverings, jute-lined joinery, woven textiles, silk upholstery and aged brass give the eye plenty to discover. Postmodern artworks sit alongside vintage lighting and mid-century Danish furniture, reflecting the client’s interest in collecting. The room feels full of personality, but each piece has enough space around it to breathe.

## The Kitchen

Rather than removing the wall between the kitchen and living room entirely, we introduced a glazed joinery screen. This creates a subtle threshold between the two spaces, allowing light and long sight lines to pass through while ensuring the kitchen retains its own identity. The mirrored splashback reflects the room beyond, adding depth and brightness, while bespoke cabinetry makes efficient use of the relatively compact footprint. Brass hardware introduces a little sparkle against the more matte cabinetry and stone, helping the kitchen feel elegant without becoming overly formal.

## The Hallway & Entrance

We completely reworked the entrance to improve the sense of arrival. Moving the guest WC away from the front door allowed us to create a proper lobby, making the apartment feel more generous from the moment you enter. A large fitted mirror visually doubles the width of the narrow hallway. Rather than leaving it to read as an obvious full-height mirror, we positioned a bespoke console in front of it, helping the mirror feel more like a backdrop than a purely practical feature. This is a useful small-space lesson: a large mirror can make a narrow area feel significantly wider, but introducing furniture, lighting or artwork in front of it helps the effect feel considered and decorative.

## The Banquette & Dining Area

The dining area makes clever use of the space beneath the window. A built-in banquette creates relaxed seating without interrupting the circulation around the room, while a circular table allows people to move around it more easily than a traditional rectangular design. We positioned a mirror to reflect the windows, trees and foliage outside, effectively extending the outlook and bringing more greenery into the apartment. The result is an informal dining space that feels connected to the outdoors and works equally well for everyday meals or entertaining.

## The Main Bedroom

The richer colours of the living spaces give way to powdery blue and green tones in the main bedroom, creating a softer, more cocooning atmosphere. We used curved shelving and wardrobes to prevent the joinery from feeling too imposing, while the wardrobes conceal the entrance to the en-suite. The rounded edges create a gentler transition into the room and make the fitted storage feel more like part of the architecture than an addition. An existing structural constraint became a useful feature, with a dual window seat creating a comfortable spot to sit while making the most of an awkward part of the room. Acrylic, glass and polished brass hardware introduce a little shine against the otherwise matte surfaces.

## The Second Bedroom

This is conceived as a more flexible, multifunctional space – balancing the needs of a guest room with those of a private workspace. Rather than a purely decorative spare room, it is designed to be used day-to-day, reflecting the way the client occupies the apartment. A more restrained palette allows the space to feel calm and adaptable whilst the bespoke wraparound headboard and bolster cushion in a patterned fabric introduces soft reds into the scheme, adding warmth and a gentle point of contrast. Custom joinery integrates storage and a compact writing area, with the desk positioned to take advantage of natural light - creating a quiet, focused corner within the room. As with the rest of the apartment, the emphasis is on clarity and usability – ensuring the space can shift easily between working, resting and hosting.

## Finally, Claire Shares Her Top 5 Small-Space Design Rules…

1. Don’t just knock everything down. Sometimes seeing less makes a home feel bigger. A glazed screen or doorway can create long sightlines and borrowed light while still giving each room its own identity.
2. Use the awkward bits. A strange window recess can become a seat, wardrobes can conceal a bathroom entrance and an underused kitchen window can become the perfect place for a dining area. In a smaller home, there should be very little dead space.
3. Remember circulation matters as much as dimensions. A circular dining table, a wall-hugging banquette or a curved bedside table might save only a little room individually, but together they can transform how easily you move through an apartment.
4. Make the joinery work hard. Storage can create a threshold, conceal a door, incorporate a desk or frame a view. The best schemes also make space for everyday clutter to disappear, particularly in kitchens and bathrooms.
5. Rely on texture rather than clutter to add interest. Linen walls, jute, aged brass, timber and woven fabrics all create atmosphere. Small rooms can absolutely take colour and pattern. It’s about editing carefully and giving each moment enough space around it to breathe.
