# How To Make A Family Home Beautiful

A neglected Georgian townhouse might not sound like the easiest starting point for a family home but interior designers Adele Lonergan and Maria Lindgren saw its potential. The result is a characterful mix of bespoke details, beautiful materials and spaces that work for real life. Here, they explain how they got the balance right…

## The Property

This four-bedroom Georgian townhouse in Belgravia had been vacant for several years before our clients bought it. With two young sons, they wanted to create a beautiful London base for the family that felt elegant and grown-up enough for entertaining, but comfortable and robust enough for everyday life. The renovation was extensive. We stripped much of the house back to brick, introducing new finishes, bespoke joinery and architectural detailing throughout, as well as a completely new staircase. It gave us the opportunity to rethink the layout and bring back some of the character and detail that had been lost over the years.

## The Brief

The brief was to find the balance between timeless and modern, creating a sophisticated home that still felt welcoming and relaxed. We kept the main living spaces fairly neutral, layering warm, natural tones with accents of green. Character comes through in the bespoke craftsmanship, beautiful materials, antiques and a mix of contemporary and more traditional furniture.

We never want a house to feel as though everything was bought at the same time, so those different layers were important. We had more fun with colour in the bedrooms. The primary suite is soft and elegant, with powdery pink used across the bedroom and adjoining sitting room to create a calm, cocooning feel. For the boys’ bedrooms, we used different shades of blue, giving each room its own personality while keeping them connected to the rest of the house. Overall, we wanted the home to feel elegant but never too precious. It needed to look beautiful, but also feel like a place the whole family could genuinely enjoy living in.

## The Entrance Hall

We wanted the entrance hall to immediately set the tone for the rest of the house: elegant and considered, but still warm and inviting. Bespoke curved cabinetry wraps around the entrance, softening the space and creating a sense of being enveloped as you step inside. A sculptural marble pedestal table sits centrally, creating a natural focal point and the perfect place for a generous arrangement of flowers. The sightlines were also important. From the entrance, you get a beautiful framed view through into the drawing room, offering a glimpse of what lies beyond and making the spaces feel connected. Pale oak herringbone flooring continues through into the adjoining rooms, helping the ground floor flow seamlessly from one space to the next.

## The Drawing Room

This is the hero space of the house and our clients wanted it to have a real sense of wow when you walked in, while still feeling comfortable and inviting. The starting point was creating a strong sense of balance. We designed a pair of bespoke burr wood cabinets to sit either side of the fireplace, adding height and helping to balance the larger pieces of furniture opposite. One of our favourite details is that the right-hand cabinet is actually a hidden bar. The curved doors open to reveal glass storage and everything needed for drinks, so it is both beautiful and practical when the clients are entertaining.

Although this is one of the more formal rooms in the house, the clients wanted to have a television here. We designed a bespoke oak-framed folding screen with inset de Gournay silk panels to conceal it completely. It feels more like a piece of art within the room – and you would never know there was a television behind it.

We kept the overall palette soft and neutral, then introduced contrast through darker metalwork, green stools and sculptural pieces. The honey tones of the burr wood bring warmth, while the curved sofa, nested stone coffee tables and Liaigre armchairs create a more sculptural feel. A Murano glass chandelier adds drama without making the room feel too formal. As with the rest of the house, we wanted the room to feel collected rather than overly coordinated. Mixing bespoke pieces with contemporary furniture and more decorative details gives it character.

## The Dining Room

Our clients love entertaining, so the starting point was creating a dining room that could comfortably seat eight to ten people while still feeling generous and elegant. We commissioned a bespoke marble dining table specifically for the space. It has a real presence but the organic shape and softly rounded edges stop it from feeling too formal. Storage was also important, so we designed two very different bespoke cabinets.

The first is a shallow, hand-carved timber sideboard with curved ends, picking up on the softer organic shapes used in the adjoining drawing room. Above it hangs a large-scale work by [George Lawrence](https://www.instagram.com/studio.lawrence?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&exln=ZDNlZDc0MzIxNw==). We loved the depth of the dark green against the otherwise neutral room as it brings just the right amount of drama to a space designed for entertaining. On the opposite wall, a full-height cabinet sits almost seamlessly within the architectural panelling. Antique mirrored doors reflect light and stop the room from feeling narrow, while concealing generous storage for the clients’ collection of fine china.

We repeated the Murano glass chandelier from the drawing room. As the two rooms connect directly, using the same statement light creates a visual link between them. The overall palette is restrained, with character coming through in the veined marble, hand-carved timber, antiqued mirror, dark timber dining chairs and art.

## The Kitchen

The kitchen needed to feel warm and refined but above all, practical for everyday family life. We used a mix of painted cabinetry and fluted oak, with Taj Mahal quartzite bringing soft, natural movement to the scheme. The clients were keen to avoid open shelving and anything that could easily feel cluttered, so we incorporated plenty of concealed storage, including a full wall of fluted oak cabinetry. Rather than an island, they wanted a proper table at the centre of the room for informal family dining. We designed a generous oval oak table, which feels softer and more relaxed and gives the kitchen a real sense of being a room to gather in.

The lighting introduces something more sculptural. The Apparatus pendant makes use of the generous ceiling height and brings a stronger, more contemporary element to the room. The palette is tonal, combining warm oak, putty-painted cabinetry and softly veined stone to create a calm kitchen with plenty of texture and interest.

## The Family Room

This is the room for the whole family to spend time together, so it needed to feel relaxed and comfortable while still sitting naturally alongside the more grown-up spaces in the house. With three young boys, hiding away the inevitable toys and clutter was a big part of the brief. We designed a full wall of bespoke joinery with plenty of concealed storage, so everything can easily be tidied away.

Comfort was key, so we designed a generous sectional sofa upholstered in a forgiving two-tone textured fabric. It feels luxurious but can also stand up to everyday family life. Rather than a traditional coffee table, we opted for a large dark blue bouclé ottoman. It sits on glides, so it can easily be moved out of the way when the boys want more floor space to play.

We carried the blue tones through into the bespoke Riviere rug, using a custom colourway of its Jigsaw design. The pattern brings a playful element without making the room feel overtly like a children’s space. We wanted to get the balance between playful and polished just right. It is clearly a family room, with toys and games very much part of it, but it still feels connected to the rest of the house.

## The Primary Bedroom & Sitting Room

The client wanted the primary suite to feel softer and more feminine than the rest of the house, so we moved away from the neutral palette downstairs and introduced powdery pink tones throughout. We wanted it to feel like a calm, hotel-like retreat, with the bedroom and adjoining sitting room reading as one continuous suite. Using the same soft pink, Paint & Paper Library Powder III, across both spaces helps to envelop the rooms and gives them a lovely sense of calm.

In the bedroom, the lacquered wraparound headboard creates a strong focal point without feeling heavy. We layered this with bespoke stone tops on the oak bedside tables, softly textured fabrics and a delicate Riviere rug to keep everything light and elegant. We were conscious that the pink should not feel overly feminine, so we introduced darker bronze and blackened metal accents, as well as an antique chest of drawers. The antique piece adds character and stops the room from feeling too polished.

The adjoining sitting room was imagined as an adult alternative to the family room: somewhere quiet to retreat in the evening, read a book or watch television away from the rest of the house. We kept it elegant but comfortable with a generous sofa, armchair and tiered marble coffee tables. Bespoke joinery is painted in the same pink as the walls, allowing it to blend into the room rather than dominate it. Repeating the alabaster pendant across both rooms connects the spaces, while the George Lawrence artwork and darker bronze details bring contrast to the otherwise soft palette.

## The Primary En-Suite

We wanted the en-suite to feel like an extension of the bedroom, continuing the same soft, feminine palette. The bespoke vanity is the focal point, made entirely from soft pink onyx. With its beautiful bullnose detailing, it strikes the right balance between classic and contemporary.

Rather than using paint, we wrapped the walls in a textured silk wallpaper, which brings warmth and softness. An antique Murano mirror sits above the vanity, alongside an antique Murano pendant that adds character and a sense of grandeur. These pieces are juxtaposed with contemporary sculptural onyx wall lights and brushed metal Dornbracht taps. Overall, we wanted the room to feel jewel-like rather than like a conventional bathroom.

## The First Boy’s Bedroom

Each of the children’s bedrooms was designed to have its own character, while being tied together through calm colours, tactile materials and classic detailing. For this room, we chose a soft, chalky blue palette that feels playful without being overtly childish, allowing the space to evolve as the boys grow. Full-height panelled wardrobes provide plenty of concealed storage, balanced with a curved open shelving section for favourite books and toys.

Twin upholstered headboards and bouclé ottomans bring softness and texture, while the oversized fabric pendant introduces a playful sense of scale. Personal details come through in the bespoke celestial lampshade, chosen to reflect the child’s star sign, and a hand-painted globe, which nods to the family’s love of travel.

## The Second Boy’s Bedroom

Continuing the soft blue palette used across the children’s rooms, this second bedroom has a more grown-up character, pairing powdery blue tones with cooler steel accents. A softly curved upholstered headboard and layers of textured bedding bring warmth, while pale blue full-height wardrobes provide generous concealed storage without overwhelming the room. The oversized fabric pendant introduces a playful sense of scale, while the bespoke celestial lampshade and hot-air balloon bring smaller moments of whimsy and personality.

Bespoke cushions in a wave-patterned Dedar fabric subtly continue the blue palette, while dark bronze lighting and ironmongery add contrast and definition. As with the other bedroom, the aim was to create a space that feels unmistakably youthful, yet considered and connected to the design of the rest of the house.
