We asked consultant dermatologist and hair and scalp expert Dr Aamna Adel to explain what the term really means, how to spot a problem and when a clarifying wash might be useful – or do more harm than good. Your scalp doesn’t accumulate ‘toxins’ that need to be drawn out or detoxified. What people are usually describing when they talk about a scalp detox is simply a more thorough or targeted cleanse that’s designed to remove excess sebum, dead skin cells and residue from styling products, dry shampoo or other leave-ons. The word ‘detox’ isn’t something to promote but there is certainly a place for effective scalp cleansing.” #### Is shampooing thoroughly not enough? “What’s important is to assess how effectively you’re cleansing your scalp – especially if you live in a polluted area with lots of traffic-associated chemicals. If your roots feel greasy quickly after washing or if you can see visible residue or your hair feels weighed down, you may be someone who benefits from a more thorough cleanse. That said, itching, flaking and redness shouldn’t automatically be interpreted as excess build-up. Instead, this could be a sign of seborrhoeic dermatitis, psoriasis, eczema or contact dermatitis, and aggressively exfoliating an already inflamed scalp can make things worse.” #### Can you tell us what signs should people be looking for? “Pay attention to your roots. They will likely feel coated, greasy or lack volume. If you can see visible product residue on your scalp or around the hair follicles, you need a good exfoliation. Sometimes people also find their usual shampoo isn’t cutting it or leaving the scalp feeling as clean as it should. How frequently you wash your hair also matters, as does the amount and type of product you use. Dry shampoo is a big one. It can be incredibly useful but if you’re repeatedly layering it onto the scalp for several days without adequately washing it away, residue can accumulate. People who use a lot of styling products, oils, waxes or silicone-containing products may also notice more residue. Equally, those with very dense or curly hair, or people wearing certain protective styles, may find it more difficult to cleanse the scalp thoroughly.” #### Which ingredients are most effective? “The foundation of your haircare routine should still be an effective shampoo containing surfactants, because these are what remove oil and debris effectively. For an oily or build-up-prone scalp, clarifying shampoos can be useful intermittently. Salicylic acid is also good in the right formulation. It is keratolytic, so it can loosen excess dead skin cells. These can also be useful if you live in a hard water area – a good filtered showerhead can be a good investment too. Anyone with dandruff should avoid ‘detoxing’ products entirely and think about using evidence-based anti-dandruff ingredients and medicated shampoos instead.” #### What common mistakes do you see people making? “One of my biggest concerns around scalp ‘detoxing’ is people using physical scalp scrubs. The scalp is skin and repeatedly scrubbing it with abrasive particles won’t necessarily make it healthier. There’s no arbitrary weekly ‘detox’ number that applies to everybody. Over-cleansing or over-exfoliating can strip too much lipid from the skin surface and compromise the scalp barrier. The result can actually be more dryness, tightness, irritation, itching and flaking, essentially creating some of the symptoms people were trying to treat in the first place.” #### Does hair type matter? “Coloured or chemically treated hair should be cautious of using anything too strong on the scalp. Frequent use of strong clarifying shampoos can contribute to colour fade and leave the hair fibres feeling drier. It’s also worth noting that curly and coily hair is more vulnerable to dryness and breakage through the lengths, so scalp cleansing should be balanced against protecting your hair’s fibre.” #### What else would you advise? “Don’t do too much at once. It’s common with skincare trends too: somebody sees build-up or flakes, so they introduce a clarifying shampoo, a scalp scrub, an acid treatment and an essential oil simultaneously. More exfoliation does not equal a healthier scalp – often you just need one good treatment. Another common mistake is applying products designed for the hair fibre directly onto the scalp, or repeatedly layering dry shampoo and styling products without properly washing them away. Finally, avoid DIY acidic mixtures like baking soda and other kitchen-based ‘detox’ recipes. The scalp has a carefully regulated barrier and pH; it doesn’t benefit from us experimenting on it.” #### Finally, when might it be time to see a professional? “If you have persistent itching, redness, burning, significant scaling, soreness, pustules, crusting or symptoms that keep returning despite appropriate cleansing, get the scalp assessed rather than continuing to experiment with products. See a dermatologist if there is associated hair loss, areas of broken hairs, scalp pain, pustules or any suggestion of scarring.” *Visit*
