CREATED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH SPOTLIGHT ORAL CARE

Sisters and dentists Dr. Lisa and Dr. Vanessa Creaven founded Spotlight Oral Care in 2016 and it’s since become one of the UK’s hottest oral hygiene brands. With this in mind, it’s little wonder they’ve recently added to the range with a first of its kind – a pregnancy toothpaste designed to keep your gums and teeth healthy as your hormones change. They’re on hand to share more, as well as their top dental advice for expectant mothers.

“Pregnant women are more at risk of gum disease especially. This is because pregnancy can change hormones quite dramatically and in turn, cause gums to become inflamed and more likely to bleed. If this goes untreated, the inflammation can worsen and lead to damage and further problems long-term. It’s so crucial you look after yourself and your teeth in pregnancy.”

“While inflammation and problems are more likely throughout pregnancy, you can keep issues at bay just by being more vigilant. As your hormones fluctuate, they will impact your gums, and in turn, the bones and teeth themselves. To counteract the problem, up your oral care routine to include more frequent activity – think flossing regularly and paying closer attention as you brush your teeth.”

“It’s also advisable to see your dentist more regularly while pregnant, as this will help keep issues to a minimum. Try making an appointment every three months for regular check-ups. If there are concerns, or if your dentist identifies any areas of concern, they can advise when to come back and what will work for you."

“Brushing your teeth regularly is paramount anyway, but especially when pregnant. Morning sickness is a time when you need to be vigilant, too. The acid your teeth is exposed to from being sick can erode your enamel, so it’s important to use a mouthwash, or wait 30-minutes after experiencing sickness to brush your teeth. This will aid in preventing any damage.”

“Our Spotlight Oral Care Pregnancy Toothpaste is incredibly important. It’s formulated to contain folic acid and fluoride. The former is designed to be used in conjunction with your prenatal vitamins and the latter is designed to re-mineralise your tooth enamel. We’ve made sure our Pregnancy Toothpaste has a very soft taste, too, in order to enable pregnant women to stomach it and not be triggered by any sensitivities.”

Keen To Give It A Go? Here Are Some Of The Key Benefits:

  • It’s specially formulated to support the oral care needs of expectant and breastfeeding mothers.

  • The Pregnancy Paste addresses common oral health concerns unique to women during and immediately after pregnancy.

  • It uses active ingredients to maintain optimum oral health through pregnancy, including sodium fluoride, folic acid and hydroxapatite – the latter of which naturally makes up your enamel.

  • The paste is available in a tolerable, mild, mint flavour, while the formulation is vegan and cruelty-free, too.
