Gluten-Free Apple Crumble

Prep Time: 15 Minutes | Baking Time: 45 Minutes

Serves 4–6

Comforting and delicious, once you’ve cracked this recipe – and it really is simple – why not mix it up with different fruits and spices? Try pear and ginger, apple and blackberry or rhubarb and vanilla.

  • 8 medium eating apples
  • 40g of caster sugar
  • 1 tbsps of plain gluten-free flour
  • 1 tsp of ground cinnamon
  • Pouring cream or dairy-free ice cream, to serve

  • 70g of unsalted butter or dairy-free spread, softened
  • 140g of plain gluten-free flour
  • A pinch of salt
  • 70g of caster sugar
  • 1 tsp of ground cinnamon

  1. Preheat the oven to 190°C (375°F) Gas 5.
  2. Peel and core the apples, then chop into 2-cm chunks.
  3. Toss the apples with a tablespoon of water, the caster sugar, flour and cinnamon, then spread evenly over the base of the baking dish. Press down lightly with your hands.
  4. To make the crumble topping, rub together the butter and flour and a pinch of table salt until the mixture resembles rough breadcrumbs.
  5. Stir in the sugar and cinnamon, then spread the mixture over the apples in the dish. Lightly press down the mixture so it is compact.
  6. You can make the topping using a food processor, if you have one. Put all of the ingredients in at the same time and pulse until you have a consistency similar to breadcrumbs.
  7. Put the dish onto a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 40–45 minutes until the crumble is golden and just brown on top.
  8. Remove from the oven and allow to cool for a few minutes before serving with cream or dairy-free ice cream.
